I keep hearing how LSU's defense under Chavis recruited smaller faster players for the D-line and at LB instead of bigger stronger players. Are there any examples of big strong fast LB's that LSU didn't pursue because they didn't fit our scheme. Or Big strong quality d-lineman that we could have landed instead of these so called small fast DL's?

It's not like we wouldn't have taken A'Shawn Robinson or Reggie Ragland because they were "to big" if we could have landed them.

I don't know about LBer considering we still recruited Beckwith and Garrett, who are both large LBers

Chavis and Brick wanted and used Beckwith at DE his freshman year. Clifton Garrett was way overbilled. He came in at 6'0 240 and most of it was fat I believe.

Chavis missed out on Kenny Young from LA and the staff completely mishandled Tillery who wanted to play DL.

Even when LSU did get big and strong DL (Anthony Johnson) they completely squandered their talent.

They also missed out on Tim Williams who played for U high.

Regardless, we are thin and might not see the payoff for a couple recruiting cycles. We are always recruiting for need, rather than depth.

The three dlineman from West Monroe that started for TCU last season could have all played at LSU.

I guess my question should have been 'do we really recruit for scheme?'. Seems to me we just recruit the best players we can get, not dictated by scheme but by how good a football player we think the recruit can be. Just so happens right now there are a lot of big strong fast DL's and LB's that we seem to have a shot at.

You recruit your scheme with the 3 stars. You take every 5 star and high 4 star you can get. (Roughly)

Yes, good point. I could see that. If it came down to a 3 star who was smallish but fast vs a 3 star who was big but slowish, some programs might go big/slow while we (under Chavis) would go with small/fast. Now we might be going the other way (if it came down to that).

There is still a chance to go this year, plus with the depth we will have everywhere minus LB next year, we should be much better.

I agree on this though. We are constantly getting tons of WRs and receiving TEs yearly. Why when we only throw around 325 times at best in a 13 game season and don't even throw to the TEs?

Williams not so much a miss. Issues... Maybe he straightened out in T - Town but staff passed on him. Not a fit.

Eric Fowler is getting bigger and stronger as his season progresses.

Chavis liked to move safeties to linebacker etc he preferred a smaller, faster defense to combat spread attacks. We lost our bigger d-lineman during the off-season

If an athlete is talented enough he can play in any scheme. The problem is that those athletes are sought by everyone, and LSU has not attracted enough of them at some critical positions. This has resulted in weaknesses either in the starting lineup (QB) and with depth (DL & LB) at those positions.

Especially DL. We have brought in some very good players. But not enough across the board. Coach O was brought in for a reason. And Steele is there to acquire LBs. IMHO CLM and company sees Bama's D and knows that we need to resemble them more than what we had under Chavis. We may give up more points and yards to spread teams. But the misses on D players with good measurables have cost us.

We didn't miss on tim Williams. He didn't want to play for Lsu at all. Came on his visit and was a complete jackass
