If you recall, Davenport was a 2009 consensus 5* DT from Mansfield. He & Rashard are/were similar is size & both highly touted prospects. Living in North LA, I have had the pleasure of seeing both kids play a lot.

That being said, IMO, Rashard is much more explosive than Chris ever was. His first step, ability to wrap-up & pursuit to the ball carrier is second to none. Also, Rashard played against top-tier 4A & 5A competition while Chris played against some rather soft 2A & 3A opponents.

I guess the point that I am trying to make is that the hype is real. Davenport is the only other kid that I have ever seen that is in the 5* mold as Rashard, but Rashard is far better. With Coach O's guidance, the sky is the limit for Rashard.

Harder to judge DT at a 2A school

I totally agree. Both attended the various camps & combines & were assessed by the "scouting services", but there is no substitute for head to head competition on a consistent basis. Iron sharpens iron.

Davenport was 2A, Al Woods was 1A.

If I'm looking to see how one of the talented DTs in this class progresses over the next few years it is Alexander rather than Lawrence.

I'm not going to knock Davenport - he was a helluva good kid and hard worker. I think he dealt with either some injury issues, scheme issues or whatever. He transferred to Tulane and went back to the DL and played fairly well for them.

However, Lawrence looks to be a hybrid - and in a good way - combines some of the traits of a good (great?) defensive end AND a great DT. We'll see if that translates to the SEC, particularly with Aranda's attacking style.

I'm as stoked about him as any player in the class, to be completely honest about it. We've missed that disruptive style of player inside, and we'll definitely need those types of players if Aranda moves more towards a 3-4 - whether it be a more open 3-4, or a smothering 3-4 like Bama plays - either way, more is put on the DL at the snap, to free up a backer to shed and pursue.

What about Ed Alexander?
What level of competition does he play in?

I think the mentalities are different. Rashard wants to get better and be great. Davenport was lazy.

Imo Lawrence, B.Jones, and R.Gary are the best 3 interior linemen I've seen in a while. A completely loaded DT class in general

i really thought Davenport would become the next Dorsey the way everyone was hyping him up. no offense to him, but i hope Rashard is nothing like Chris

I wouldn't go so far as to say Davenport was lazy. But, in looking at the two, you can definitely see that Rashard plays with more intensity (even a bit of a mean streak).

This right here is the real concern from a highly ranked in state DT.....I know ED has played weaker competition....and have not heard much about him being very dominate....
Davenport was soft.....RL is not.....we shall is

Al Woods is a good example of that.

All we can do is hope they are not comparable players in any way. Dorsey would be ok with me and in fact I would take it now.

In all fairness, I do think Lawrence has a hell of a lot better Dline coach now with O, than Davenport had with Brick Haley.
