Not doubting your sources at all and they go along with what most people nationally say as well but the chances are better than they give due. Basically they're just falling into the trap of the popular theory. Hell, for months on end Scott Schrader was basically guaranteeing that Willis was a Trojan and I've yet to see him admit he was wrong. Of course it would be spun to say that USC wasn't willing to wait but that's bogus as Willis has always said he would wait to decide. I like our chances. Wouldn't guarantee it or put money on it but we'll be the team to beat once he visits, whether in August or in November. Our staff feels very good about where they stand with Willis. Never hurts to try and with our on field success, it will only get harder for Willis to turn us down.

I don't know why everybody is assuming Goodman is going to UCLA. Everything I've heard is that UW is his leader and that we are in the driver's seat for him. I haven't heard anything about Willis though.

He would be if he would not have decommited based on "outside" advice.

I just want the best for the kid. I have seen too many times where "outside" influences superceded what a teenager wants to help influence the rest of his life.

Hindsight is the best way to assess evaluations. Why you'd disparage that approach is mystifying.

If don't understand why 20/20 hindsight is not a viable way to look at these things, then I don't know what to tell you. Blackjack would be a whole easier if we could see the cards before taking a hit. Why don't you start a site that ranks the classes of 2007 and 2008 now, that would be very informative

This is the heart of your problem right here. You don't like the recruiting services so you disparage them and then assume anyone that doesn't share your view "worships" them. Its nonsesnse. The vast majority of us understand what the rankings are and that they are by no means guarentees of anything.

4 of 32 is pathetic IMO.

I don't mean this to sound condesending, so i apolgize in advance, without context, this is completely meaningless and just shows you don't understand how to look at it or statistics.

Case in point:

quote:

Once a non-Top 250 kid has signed a LOI and starts his career, he is just as likely to be drafted in the 1st round as any 5-star from the total pool of LOI signers (elaborated on below). And this is true every year; the year cited is not anomalous.

This is completely wrong. Take a basic statistics course. There are only 30-35 5 star players and using your number over 250 non ranked players. if 4 from each pool make it that means and there are 35 5*'s, each 5 star has a 11.4% chance of being a first rounder. If 4 of the pool of 250 make it, they have a 1.6% chance of making.

11.4% > 1.6%. Its simple math. Basing it on the # of first round picks is simply wrong.

quote:

My beliefs trend toward deferring to our coaching staff

The coach staff recruits mostly higher ranked players. They do not wait for Rivals or 247 to publish their rankings and then go off of that. both have basically the same film to watch and can all see the same things.

See LSU, Alabama, UGA, Clemson and every other big program did not recruit Robert Nkemdiche because Rivals ranked him #1, more like the opposite. Look at the 5 star players and see who is recruiting them. While you are blasting the services, you are also blasting the coaches. If Rivals was wrong from ranking Russell Shepard a 5 star, then wasn't LSU's coaching staff also wronng in recruiting him? If rivals was wrong about 5* Burton Scott in 2008, then so was Nick Saban for signing.

Sorry cheif, no one that is defending the rankings is "worshiping" them, we just understand how to view them.

Paul Oliver-
Dee Webb- good college cb
Ted Ginn- beast
Eric Berry- beast
Curtis Brown- decent, 3rd rd pick
PP7- beast

Janzen Jackson- beast, just ignorant
Greg Reid- solid player
Darius Winston- bust
Branden Smith- solid player
Milliner- future 1st rd pick

Wow! this was quite a discussion. Using percentages to compare 5* amounts versus 4*, oh boy. I think both sides made prolific points, some points not sure what they hell they mean, to the point of throwing in global warming? In summary, i think we can agree, anyone rated a 5* is welcomed at LSU. But don’t get too enamored, his chances of being beat out by a not-so-pronounded 4* are very likely.

i’m reminded of Joe Mcknight - wasn’t he like the very tippy top number 1 overall?

Jim Mora addressing the press corp once said, “you just don’t know, you just don’t know, and you never will"

Are you going to try to argue that a player that was drafted to the NFL after three years did not have a successful college career?

Didn’t realize there was much of an argument? Mcknight was a huge disappointment for USC. Successful, maybe for some, but not a guy who was considered the number 1 recruit?
He couldn’t hold the damn ball, always fumbling, and stayed injured. He’s a great athletic but so are track stars. He has flashes of greatness even sometimes with the Jets but ~~~~

I think its fair to say he was a disapointment in college given his ranking, in the same way Reggie Bush was ultimately a disappointment for the Saints as the #2 overall pick.

its worth mentioning that the star ratings are not meant as a projection to the NFL draft. That's a standard those griping about rankings have raised. Its really a ranking of how good a kid is in HS and how he projects to the next level, college, not 2 level up.

Exactly. its why I don't get too upset about losing any one player. I mean, I wish we had gotten Landon collins. He was the staff's #1 guy, but when he decided to go else where, we went and signed Corey Thompson a 4* S, who also projects as a very good player.
