sorta agree, but at the same time you have consistently replenish the well or else it runs dry…. you can't have 5 OL in one cycle, then 2 in the next, then 3 or 4, then 1, etc… take the same or similar amount, even if less heralded, and DEVELOP them…

LSU doesn't do this, at least not on the offensive line… which is why Ol' Sauce Shirt gotta go...

Does anyone else feel like Turner was more aggresive last year with his blocking?

I didn't see that same "mean streak" from last year...

personally, i think this was a direct result of having to stay "off" and help Hawkins… the year before he had Vadal, who handled his own, but with Hawkins mainly a pass blocking T, he had to assume two roles at one time, rather than having to just concentrate what was directly in front of him...

You are asking me if I have a problem with recruiting elite talent ready for the NFL after three seasons. No. I don't.

Recruit more in the trenches every year is my answer to that, and not place so much emphasis on skill position players.

vadal is a true sophomore

not suggesting you are implying this... but are you saying we aren't recruiting in the trenches?

Not enough bodies in the trenches, each year, on both sides of the ball.

my sentiment exactly… you win the game in the trenches, and we don't consistently recruit enough bodies, nor do we develop the ones we do get enough….

We signed in 2013

7 were on the defensive line (not counting beckwith)
4 were on the offensive line (not counting fehoko)
11 total out of 26 for 42% of the class

We signed in 2012
5 offensive lineman
1 defensive end (not counting feist)
6 total out of 21 for 28 % of the class

We signed in 2011
4 offensive lineman
5 defensive lineman
9 total out of 23 for 39% of the class

It's cyclical but no matter what, at least a quarter of our class every year is for the interior line... not counting tightends for blocking or hybrid guys either.

We are getting the beef. Light this year, heavy the next

For fun in 2014 we will sign :
3 DL- GWIII, Deondre Clark, Godchaux in the minimum
3 OL - clapp,brumfield and kelly
6 Total out of 25 - 24% of the class

look for us next year to sign around 40% on the lines!

Good, because over 40% of the players on the field of 22 are lineman. Should be closer to that each signing class.

this is silly. take the best players.. and if they're going in 3 years to the NFL, they were probably more than worth the scholarship.

LSU would probably have put just as many in the NFL in the last few years as any school if it wasn't for injuries- wiliford, faulk, hurst.
Hopefully recruits can see this.

All very good and valid points.

Would you agree though, that OL recruiting should never be left to address next year's lineup? We should be recruiting for 2015 as well since so many OL can go down/go pro....no?

RB's can step in right away, but OLine takes a different kind of guy. A mature one.

I think we are recruiting for the future with every passing year

Most offensive lineman are 2 or 3 year starters with some being 2 or 3 year backups or transferring out or having career-ending injuries.

I think a constant, waveform pattern of recruiting in the trenches is a decent way to go about it.

I trust our coaches, even the offensive line ones. I also think over the next few seasons, b.c. or louisiana's rich and deep talent on the lines and our ability to sign most of them... you will see a decent number of offensive and defensive lineman drafted high from LSU

Collins, Hawkins, Pocic, Boutte are all guys I expect to be high on draft boards

Herron, Bower, Hunter, LaCouture, and Beckwith(hybrid) are similar type players on defense.

As far as the way we recruit, I think it can and will work. We just need to do a better job at developing them. Stud had complete focus on them this year and we were really young. We had a thousand yard rusher, a 500 yard rusher, two 1k yard receivers and a VERY SLOW footed 3k yard passer .... our line play doesn't get enough credit for this year.

ps.. yall saw what we did to a defense that's going to be in the national championship. Not to mention TCU who still, mind you, had a top 10 defense nationally

I tend to think that the small quantity of OL recruits this year is a direct result of Stud being on his way out...that position is not being recruited in a very forward thinking way ATM. I mean a couple prospects have popped up here and there like Kelly but after CRob went off the board it has been too quiet. I think they're kinda saying frick it, we have two OL we know are real good ones already in this class...when the new guy comes in we'll let him choose his guys next year rather than him being stuck with Stud's evals on guy's that are far down the board.

I suspect next year LSU will have a new OL coach and stock up on a large class.
