NSD attention seekers
Posted by DivotBreath on 1/19/17 at 11:40 am250
There are players that seek the spotlight on NSD and do the old "picking a hat on TV" thing or some other method of drawing attention to themselves. Then there are those players that commit, sign and fax their papers, but do it in a low-key manner and just celebrate with family and friends.
As a coach, assuming equal skill level, would one player be more desirable than the other? If so, why?
(Note: This is not about any particular player but just a general question.)

I'd want both guys.

No - these kids have worked hard and deserve whatever attention they garner. In the end, it is us that are giving them the attention. Different strokes for different folks, some want the attention, some do not. I don't think an18 year old wanting to be the center of attention for 5 minutes on periscope, ESPN, or a local news outlet makes them a bad personality or troublemaker - they're 18 and again, they earned the right to make that decision.

If I were a coach, I wouldn't give two shits about what type of show the recruit put on when committing as long as I was made aware of his decision ahead of time and was not misled.

Some of those events are put on by the school. It's an exciting time for the athletes, the coaches, the student body and the school. I wouldn't always put the spotlight on the kid making those decisions and thus I don't put much weight into them doing it either way. It's how they carry themselves through the recruiting process that says more about their character.

They're on the swim team.

It appears that in the long run the more attention seeking players become more lucrative than the low key guys once they hit the league. Take Juice and OBJ for instance the world is very familiar with OBJ and those outside of football really know Juice. However they both reach this crazy amount of receiving yards at the same amount of time. OBJ is building nationally recognized brand with his flamboyant persona.

So these kids aren't allowed to have a little fun with the biggest decision of their life up to that point and a decision they have worked hard for at the high school level for four years?
I know I would have had fun with it, even if everyone knew I was going to LSU

They can announce however they want. As long as they come in, put in the work, and contribute, no one will give a shite if they attention whored when they picked their college.

I was not coming down in favor of either. In fact, I think there are pros and cons with both type of players and I think it would be easy to prove that either variety can be a star or a bust.
Players headed to the NFL get interviewed extensively for anything and everything. The question is really aimed at whether a college coach considers more than just skill and grades when evaluating the fit for a program. A lot of players transfer after they don't get the early playing time because they have a problem adjusting to the fact that everyone on the team is pretty damn good.

Some of those hat-pulling kids are asked to do so by staffs though. It's an easy way to have a school's name get out there in a dramatic way. You know, the way LSU was during #5for5? All anyone could talk about leading up that day was how many 5 stars LSU could have and how they could be putting together the highest rated class ever. Well, a certain coach shut that shite down by asking certain players to lead LSU on and then commit on national TV on NSD. It's all a chess match anymore.

These kids can do whatever they want. I as an adult choose not to watch any of them. Landon Collins taught me a lesson on letting an 18 yr old get to my emotions. I follow recruiting but nothing is done until the papers are signed and the fat lady has sung.
I don't watch AA games for same reason - all marketed hype. I don't watch signing or picking ceremonies. I just pleasantly read about em on the Rant.

Subtly racist thread is subtly racist

I thought this thread was gonna be about posters.

Your implication of a racist thread is offensive. No particular player is mentioned, past or present and the only comments about previous attention stunts are generalized and can be attributed to any player. Additionally, it was clearly stated that there are pros and cons with both types of players.

Nope, I'm good. Your implication is just way off target.

There are those that make a show and there are those who are the show.
The see me crowd is fine, the show me crowd is better.
The quiet assassin with the chip on his shoulder is the best.
Most of the time, you take 50 of see me crowd to find 10 of the show me crowd to find 1 of the assassins.
I think it's great they have their day in the sun but, it'll all come out in the wash so they say.

Great idea.
Make a negative thread about recruits 2 weeks before signing day.

I thought this thread was going to be about posters wanting attention with their "sources".
