Sounds like this kid is going to try to make baseball his future.

No, they evaluated him in fall camp and he was told he needed to work on his game. He went to LSUE and did that. Then came back to LSU and has continued to improve. Heck, just look at last year, Rhymes wasnt nearly as consistent of a hitter last year as he is this year.

dude, he went to Eunice and hit nearly .500
you don't work on things and all of a sudden hit .483
he's just a natural hitter.
LSU missed on him. PM will tell you as such.
oh, you mean he didn't hit .500???
come on. What do you remember about last year? He was our most consistent hitter after Mahtook.
He hit .360
that would lead our team this year.

yeah, he obviously improved all aspects of his game he's always been a great hitter for average and a mediocre to poor fielder.

You're right Les, as always...
I don't even know why we bother to argue against any point that you make.
But, is there even the remote possibility that...yes...Rhymes had all of the ability in the world when he tried out at LSU but, for some reason, failed?
Maybe he didn't focus on baseball enough as an incoming Freshman...partying too hard?
Maybe he just choked under the pressure as a Freshman?
For whatever the reason - he failed. If he was such a phenom coming out of HS, then why didn't he go elsewhere after not getting a scholarship from LSU - why didn't he get drafted high?
Is it at all possible that after not making the cut at LSU, he decided to focus more on baseball at Eunice, to give 100% of his efforts to the game, thus becoming the player that he is today?

am i preventing you from arguing whatever you want? i dont think.
Rhymes was a 3 time all state at a really good HS baseball program.
He just didn't all of a sudden learn how to hit between getting cut at LSU as a FR and going to LSU Eunice shortly thereafter.
Its ok to say that LSU missed on him. Coach has said so himself.

you cannot ever criticize or critique the LSU baseball program on this site or you will get thoroughly hammered by the fans

How is it possible that LSU is the only school or major league franchise to miss out on a player? With the media resources available now, every player in the country can be seen by anyone. Why did he wait around for LSU?
Posted on 5/14/12 at 12:25 pm to sabanisarustedspoke
He always dreamed of playing for LSU. He passed on other offers to walk on at LSU. Talking about Rhymes here. I've heard the same for Laird as well as his girlfriend attends LSU.

I don't think some realize the treatment a lot of college walk-ons go through while trying out for a team. Big time coaches don't like to admit that they may have missed on a talent evalution and tend to always give their guys the benefit. But I also realize that due to scholly limitations in baseball the margin for error is a lot smaller.

I agree. And my guess is what happened to Rhymes is PM saw him as a walkon and looked at his skill set: not overly fast. No position. Tight roster numbers. "ok, this kid is a pretty good hitter, but is he really going to play over our scholahip guys? Where else is he going to help us?"
Then you have a guy like Matt Fury(walk on). Can play anywhere on the diamond and is a good base runner.
I just don't think PM, at the time, had opened his mind to the fact that RR could be a legitimate SEC caliber hitter. The "walk on" label was stuck in his head.

So did Tommy Banks and Andrew Whitworth in junior high.

Yeah, I know, but they gave him a chance out of H.S. HE failed to impress.
Mainieri said it was the hardest cut he had to make. Obviously he impressed as a walk on for him to say this. We just didn't have room that season.

Honestly though LSU probably knew how bad he wanted to come here so why waste a scholly on a fringe player who you know will walk on?
