How much do the LSU coaches rely on recruiting service ratings in deciding to make an offer vs. high school coach recommendations vs. their own observations vs. scouting staff? I am trying to gauge how much talent evaluation by a head coach goes into who gets offered. Is it common for a coach to offer 2 and 3 star recruits, if they believe they are right and the rating services are wrong?

Yes. There are situations where they value their talent evaluations more than the industry ratings. In some cases highly rated 4 stars will have less offers than a 3 star. Just depends on position/ development/ off field issues, etc

They don't give a shite about recruiting services rating after they evaluate a player

The recruiting services adjust their ratings based on a coaches evaluation of a player far more often than a coach will offer a player based on his recruiting service ranking.

I would say a coach may get a name from a recruiting site but never will offer a kid without at least talking with them and watching tons of film if not seeing them in person. I would say 90% of offers come from in person meetings of at least one of the coaches at some time.

Even if offered from a phone conversation and film I'm sure they ask to meet with them before a commitment is accepted. Say if the guy wants to commit after an offer he may say well let's get mom, dad, guardian here with you on a visit first or let me and the coaches fly over there to come meet you and your family first then make this official.

There may be rare cases where you just trust that recruit is a fit and let it happen but I'm sure it's really not official until that in person meeting happens.
