CEH- 5'8 200lbs 4.47 laser forty

Etienne 5'10 210lb 4.43 laser forty

Both will end up about 215 here. Compact shifty backs with great vision and break away speed. don't be fooled either, both will drop their shoulder and steam roll you in a second.

Neither looks that big, but both have barrel sized thighs, its quite frightening to say the least .

CEH is a Maurice Jones Drew clone and Etienne reminds me of David Wilson from Va Tech. Spent some time with the giants and was trending up, but his neck ended his career.

There are only a handful of prospects that run in the 4.4 range at the combine every year.

They don't run in the 4.4 range. They have the potential to be all SEC type players but they aren't that fast.

yep, thanks Nam.

2" and 10-15 lbs is a big difference for a RB. Please don't misconstrue that as not wanting one and not the other.

Curtis Martin, against whom I tend to compare 'every down backs' against, was 5' 10" or 11" and was slightly heavier at Pitt (just under 220 lbs approx) and usually just over 210 lbs normally in NFL.

So to say Etienne is a "small shifty RB" is false. The shifty part is fine. I liked the "compact" description used above. But just because they aren't as big as Ware or LF7, don't think they are small for a RB.

Don't forget, until Guice started showing out everybody, including media and over on the SECr, viewed him as a 'scat back'. So it does happen. Palmer was the only regular media type saying different.

I know, preaching to the choir here (and not saying anyone in this post has said these things); just trying to put size/speed in context here.

Etienne runs a legit 4.4. Check who ran the fastest 40 yard time at the opening

The laser times are not electronic start and electronic finish (which produces the most accurate times). Instead they are hand start and electronic finish (what the nfl combine uses)

Camps like the opening aren't in the business to put out numbers in the 4.5 - 4.7 range for skill players.

There isn't a college coach in the country that puts any stock in 40 times. If they want to know how fast you are they watch film

I actually think Etienne could get bigger, around 220 and be a very hard runner. I like his style almost like Guice just doesn't go down and has tremendous balance. He will be offered if we miss on Akers. I would ask Akers to make up his darn mind though, either come play for us or we offering so and so, we want you but we can't just wait. Saban uses this tactic well and I think LSU could also. Especially coach O, we would be ok with either. Then you always have the following year to get another big time back.

Akers is an EE so Etienne will know before NSD if he has a spot here or not. Unless Etienne is an EE?

Offer Etienne.
Let him know there is no doubt.
There is room.

He isn't an EE so your spot on. He will know in January whether Akers is here or not

Very true, you can generally add .15 to .2 seconds to a 40 time when making the jump from laser timed to hand timed.

While that may not seem like much, there is a big difference in a true 4.4 and 4.6.

However, as YeahYeah mentioned, 40 times are overrated. Look to cone/shuttle drills and their 20 yd. sprint split instead of the 40 for RBs when assessing football athleticism.

I think you can argue that vertical measurements are more indicative to a players natural athleticism than 40 us times.

Additionally, I wasn't trying to take a shot at the players. I believe that both guys have the potential to be All SEC/NFL players. That's a huge compliment.
I guess it's just a personal issue I have with all of these recruiting services (and events like The Opening) pumping out grossly inflated numbers.

I never understood how a guy gets 1.5" shorter, 15 lbs lighter, and .3 seconds slower from high school to leaving college.

Which has better start-stop agility? To me, thats what separates Guice from the other good backs...

I believe you just described Guice.
