If I read the 247Sports report on Kiner entering the portal correctly it adds another available scholarship? Not sure if I’m reading it right!

No, we can only take 3 more players for the '22 cycle. Period. End of discussion. Has to be either HS (virtually irrelevant since its so late) or Transfer Portal. Staff is targeting CB, TE, and OL (in that order imo). Sevyn Banks is rumored to be coming in. DB from OSU.

The rule is youre able to take an additional 7 guys this year if youve had corresponding players transfer out. And we've had more than 7 guys transfer out.

No unfilled spots of the 32 allowed can be carried over. So it's a use it or lose it 3 remaining spots.

There is talk that they may do the same thing (32 with 7 matching transfers out) for '23, but thats tbd.

Edit: no SEC player who entered the transfer portal after Feb 1 can transfer to another SEC school without sitting out a year, UNLESS they have already graduated.

Also, May 1 is the deadline to enter the transfer portal for the '22 season (unless an exemption is granted, which i guess is an always true statement).

There's a limit and I think we hit that limit already so no?

*edit* mentioned above. only a few more spots.

Here is a direct quote from the article….”the off-season overhaul continues, whether Kelly wants it to or not. The new head coach has talked about using the last few spots on the transfer portal and now this could be another scholarship for his staff to use in the coming weeks.” Kind of confusing knowing what I think I know about the scholarship rules but I wasn’t sure that’s why I asked. 10 down votes for asking….seriously?

Soooo i think i know what the author might have meant...

There could arise a situation where even though we have 3 remaining recruiting spots, we would be unable to take in more players IF we were at the 85 scholarship limit. In this scenario, Kiner would be out (-1 scholarship), we would then be at 84 scholarships, and we can afford to pick up someone from the TP.

HOWEVER, i really doubt we are at the 85 man limit. we had sub 40 scholarship players for the bowl game and i dont think we've given out 45+ scholarships since then. Also, the staff has said many times they are actively looking to use those three spots, which, if the article meant the scenario above was true, then they staff is hand in hand looking for new players while looking to cut current scholarship players. That would be messed up

I do frequently think about how if Peyton Todd progressed as he should have and if Skinner didnt lose his spot on the team, we wouldve saved two transfer spots by not having to pick up the LS and the punter from ND and we wouldve had more spots to pick up guys for needed positions... oh well, just more prove Ed O was ruining this program

Im kinda of ranting now but....

I am curious if the staff, in order to not completely waste remaining spots, picks up a TP guy who might not be that talented or in a position of need just to use the spot rather than let it go to waste.

At this point, a body is a body and if hes willing to compete it could help the team

I knew someone would transfer when they added Noah Cain.

I think Goodwin is the better player anyway.

Coming out of HS he was. Kiner was ahead of him last year yet was buried on depth chart this spring. Might say a lot about Orgeron.

I think they would rather sign younger guys like they did with Weeks, etc. I think Banks at CB only has this season left.

I am hoping Goodwin can make it through this next season without getting injured.

He has explosive speed and could be a receiving threat out of the backfield.

You can't get hung up on the number for the bowl game. That number did not include about a dozen players who were on scholarship but simply not playing because of injury, eligibility, or being so concerned about using their redshirt last year that they turned down a golden opportunity.

ETA: That didn't come out too salty at the end, did it?

Was way, way down in the pecking order at OSU with the insane amount of DB's they have there.... His film looks pretty decent though.

Yes and that number is now down to 2 more total players that we are able to sign for 2022 with the signing of CB Sevyn Banks.

Saban has loopholed cases like this, and has been able to take an additional player to replace a player that leaves in the spring.

Voluntary Withdrawal I think is the term. If the departing players signs a Voluntary Withdrawal, supposedly his scholarship can be replaced. That is apparently part of how bama always seems to oversign.

But the NCAA exception for Bama is 95 official roster plus 30 gray shirts and 25 academic (only) scholarship players.

Yes, I’m jaded. Just so sick of the NCAA never even taking a whiff concerning any potential smoke out of that program.

U read it right, Kiner heading to Cincy College cause he didn't have it in him to compete in the SEC for a playoff or conference championship so next best thing was to go home to mama so his parents can bring him food often

He will only count for next year if needed.

The vacated scholarship can be used by offering it to a current non-scholarship player. That's about it.
