“I do diminish the weight of recruiting rankings, quite honestly, and I don’t make any apologies about it. I know I coached at TCU and we finished No. 2 in the country and we beat Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl and we had a bunch of NFL players on our team that were not big-time recruits. Andy Dalton was not a big-time recruit. We beat UTEP on Andy Dalton coming out of high school. So anyway, I’ve seen it work with a good program and good player development and great evaluation."

“BUT, the very top players in the country, you can tell they’re different. It doesn’t take a particularly skilled eye to pick out those people. My point is, there’s a huge number of guys underneath the top 50 players in America, where it’s a whole new ballgame. Differentiating those players is virtually impossible. Ranking those players is a stretch, and trying to figure out who’s going to be better in three years out of those players down the line is a difficult task, for everybody. Not just the recruiting ranking people, but the coaches. That’s why when you watch the NFL draft, there are people taken from everywhere.”

Interesting comments, and accurate, IMO, especially about the potential for the QB recruit to be an "equalizer" for your recruiting class. Projecting a QB's "fit" to run your offensive system, and his potential for development is huge. Recruiting rankings don't seem to differentiate in value among positions - a QB's potential for success in your offensive system is far more important than signing a 5-Star TE, or even a highly ranked WR (someone has to get the ball to him consistently).

Don't know if that address will link when I post this - if not, somebody help with it, please.

“I also believe that one of problems is the only people that really know what’s going on in recruiting [the coaches] are not allowed [by NCAA rules] to comment on it. So you have kids, and these people that are alleged recruiting experts, that are commenting on recruiting and they actually don’t know what’s going on inside those meeting rooms.”

Statement of the Year! If the College Coaches were allowed to chime in on who they they believed the top players were this recruiting game would be totally different! in short who the frick made this fat sloppy mofo who never seen the inside of a huddle an expert on evaluating talent?

If my memory serves me correctly Les Miles made his first 2017 offer in July 2012 and Nick Saban made his first 2017 offer to that same kid in Feb 2013 seven months later and Mack Brown a couple of months after Nick Saban. The kid has been in absolute beast mode ever since. how anyone not named Nick Saban, Les Miles or Mack Brown (3 proven National Champions) can over rule those three opinions just blows my mind. Especially if they dont hold the title of Head Coach of a Power 5 Football Team.

So we shouldn't want five star recruits now?

I bet that guy will take Bama's roster over his own any day of the week.

Are they overrated to some extent, yes. However, there is a direct correlation between recruiting rankings and a team's on the field performance year in and year out.

I think he said that the top 50 recruits (5-Stars) are pretty easy for everyone to see, but the next 400-500 are much harder to rank.

nah i think his point is that with the proper evaluation you can build a Championship Squad without top level recruits. look at Wisconsin 2017 Ranked #5 overall with at least 2-3 walk-on players starting on their team.

And a Les Miles coached LSU team should have beat them.

Sure talent evaluation and development are critical but don't come here saying the rankings mean squat.

Look at the past 10 national champs and go look up their recruting rankings.
Hell, go see who played in the game and go see their recruting rankings.

Yes, coaches can get in trouble by relying on rankings. Look at Mack Brown at Texas and CUM at Florida (in the later years).

The odds of making it to the pros are significantly higher if you are a five or four star than a two or three star.

He can say what he wants but recruiting rankings indicate the likelihood of a program's success. Someone did a story a few yrs back and found that since the recruiting rankings started and the team composites were kept that when a team got multiple #1 classes on a roster that team went on to win a NC and in most cases multiple NC's.

Stars do not determine if a player is a boom or a bust but they do indicate the likelihood of that player succeeding. Another analysis showed that the higher the star rating the more likely a player was to be a college All American and/or make a NFL roster.

Yes, there are 5* busts but they are few...

Totally right

yhere are players you 100% know are on a different level. you look at LF7 and a guy like Julio Jones and it's a no brained. But besides that I don't believe people at 247 watch the other 5000 high school players.
