After listening to Shea Dixon on 104.5 this morning, it seems pretty obvious that LSU may well need to include Rodney Sopsher in this class to get Ishmael.

Dixon said Bama recruiting both brothers like LSU.

If you are Bama it’s a great strategy. Even if you don’t land Ish (and they absolutely want him) then you force the hand of LSU to eat up another schollie to get Ish by pressing for Rodney. LSU has more pressure to treat Rodney right than Bama who would no doubt process him after Ish signs. It’s like playing a game of chicken with Rodney.

So where the Sopsher boys wind up will be interesting. In reality LSU may only have 5 spots left if the Sopsher Boys are part of this class. Lee, Palmer, Emery, Parker would only leave 1 spot left (barring attrition from current commits).

Numbers are tight.

How do you say Sopsher?

Thats easy. I would let the juco TE walk and take Sopsher’s brother. Problem solved.

Kind of surprising that Shea is talking about it openly, but yes, that is the plan if we land Sopsher. And yes, if it comes down to it, and we land who we want and need a spot, we will shuffle the class as needed.

I will also add that I'm personally not a fan of wasting a scholarship spot on him. He is not an SEC level player, and I'd like the spot for someone that is. I'd be all for preferred walk on spot though, but if we want Sop, this is what it will take.

In fairness to Shea, he was asked specifically about how Rodney was tweeting a pro Alabama tweet, and how it seems that Alabama is recruiting Rodney to get his brother. Then he was asked if that is what it will take for LSU to get his brother and if LSU is doing that/willing to do that. He didn't just give all that information out on its own.

I somewhat disagree. Unlike last year, the numbers seem to be fine this year from a "needs" perspective. The class is filling up, but there aren't a lot of needs left to fill assuming everyone stays committed.

To me, our biggest needs in this class were DB, QB and RB and we've filled those, with one spot left for either Cain or Emery.

It would be nice to add another DL or edge rusher, but in your scenario, we do still have a spot open for one.

The bigger issue to me, with taking Rodney Sopsher is how it effects our overall team scholarship limit for next year. As it stands today, we're going to need to make 14 roster spots available in order to sign a 25 player class. We currently have 83 scholarship players and are only scheduled to lose 9 to graduation. Obviously we'll have some juniors declare for the draft, but we will still need 5-10 guys to transfer if we sign 25 in this class.

I have little doubt that a scholly will open up as someone from qb position will transfer.
I know that doesnt let us sign over the limit, but it does let you give a scholly, after the transfer out, to a walk on player, right?

It’s not like it was a big secret. Ish has been quoted as saying LSU is recruiting his brother.

Only to a walk on who has been at school at least two years. Last year, Orgeron gave the two extra scholarships (from Teuhma transferring and Seth Stewart quitting the program) to Jonathan Rucker (senior) and Caleb Lewis (3rd year sophomore).

I can see us possibly losing Greedy, White, Lawrence, Alexander and Fehoko. I also suspect we will have some WR transfers.

Awful high price to keep Saban out of that area, but may be worth it. I do hate taking marginal prospects to land/secure the big one though, Lanard for Leonard, etc...

Doubt Alabama's recruiting strategy is based upon gamemanship to influence what LSU or any other university does with its scholarships. They recruit the players they believe will best help them win as does LSU

Do you think Bama is going to offer Rodney a scholarship?

I know both they and A&M have the option on the table, too, but not sure how serious they are about using it.

Lanard Fournette. Worked out OK for LSU. Good kid, never been a problem and may get actually get some action at some point in his career.

I mean, the only way it "worked out" was Leonard came here. Lanard is not an SEC caliber player at all, it's why after 3 years he basically hasn't played.

Yeah, they are both just as squeezed for spots as LSU. So why would LSU have to give Rodney a scholarship to get Ish? I guess you're saying that he favors Alabama then?

Rodney will commit to us then ishmael will commit to Bama last minute. I actually brought this scenario up months ago
