do most LB recruits come in not much more than 200-220 lbs? I understand these fellas are going to put on weight as time goes on, but is this the regular?

Chavis likes fast athletic LB's for his system.

Luz, you beat me to it.

I've heard this, but can you expand? I have no clue what this means. I'm not a coach or game planning expert or a DC like most folks on TD.

In 06 Sheppard, Riley and Cutrera all came in between 205-224. Those were three of the bigger LB commits serve signed at once in one year.

Not saying that we wouldn't take a fast, big LB if they had interest though. The lighter LB is usually faster.

Minter - 231
Baker - 206
Baker - 206

but what is it, schematically, that Chavis wants what otherwise might be viewed as 'not a prototypical NFL LB'?

To stop the spread offense

In a 4-3, exactly how big do you think LB's are?
Jonathan Vilma as a pro bowl NFL MLB last year was 230.
The huge linebackers that you see are oftentimes (but not always) 3-4 linebackers which involves some hybrid DE/LB's. (Mingo actually comes to mind)
200-220 out of HS, before Moffit gets a hold of them seems just dandy.

you asked if it was normal for LBs to come in between 200-220 he told you three big LBs who were recruited between 200-220 I'm not seeing the hang up here

This year, maybe due to our talent distribution on Defense, but probably due to speed, we ran a lot of 4-2-5 type looks. His mustang package is another one, which is a modified 3-2-6 with all 3 down linemen being speed rushers. (I believe) But the mustang is more situational.
Regardless, I'm not so sure our linebackers are vastly undersized for an NFL 4-3.

ETA2: Just because someone weighs under 265 doesn't mean they can't lay the wood. Just ask TM7 and Ron Brooks. In fact TM7 was the only player (iirc) that got a clean nasty hit on Cam Newton last year.

Speed kills. LSU's defense kills because it is fast. What else needs to be explained?

what do you want big slow linebackers that cant stop the spread or man up on defenders. this is 1960 football.

In a 4-3 scheme, the DEs and DTs (4) are usually on the line of scrimmage, facing O-linemen straight up. Chavis still prefers speed over bulk in these spots, but these are the guys asked to eat blocks more often than not, with packages that allow the DE to come free in certain situations.
The LB's role (3), then, is to be fast and rangy enough to make the play if the DE and DT don't shed their block and make it themselves.
This differs from a 3-4, because usually a nose tackle is flanked by two hybrid DE/DTs (3). These guys eat blocks too, but this leaves more O-linemen free than a 4-3 does. The answer is to have big, physical (typically slower) LB's who can shed the occasional pulling guard and still make the play.
LSU and Bama are the gold standard for the two schemes as of last year.

Like Mingo, they sign as LB and possibly move to DE. Just sign em!
