isn't that what we have been complaining about all year?

Lots of idiots have done lots of complaining but I don't remember more than a couple saying our running backs were at fault.

Porter has been a very good running backs coach at Arkansas State, Okie State and LSU.
Plus he is a very good recruiter. If he gets the Memphis job Les will have to go get another guy who has a history of developing running backs and hopefully can recruit well too.

developing running backs is by far the easiest coaching job on a team

being a good RB is mostly natural running ability and physical talent

it's the truth

good backs are good backs. that's why it's so easy for freshman backs to play in CFB and rookie RBs to play in the NFL

losing porter as a recruiter WOULD hurt, but he's the easiest guy to replace as a coach

don't know why, we just know he was the only coach not offered a raise

Doesn't really mean much when you consider what he is being paid now.

Porter is the 20th highest paid assistant in the SEC and the 3rd highest paid on the LSU staff only behind the coordinators.

So that would not be the reason he would leave but rather a shot to up his career and become a head coach which most coaches strive for.

But there's no doubt that Porter, 37, who has spent the last eight seasons on Les Miles' staffs at LSU and Oklahoma State, wants to be a head coach, something he made clear a couple of years ago when he was named Rivals.com 2007 National Recruiter of the Year. He also won the honor again earlier this year.

"Hopefully, (my long-term goal is) to be a head coach," he said at the time. "I would much rather be known as a great football coach rather than a great recruiter."

"If I had no affiliation with Larry Porter at all, just looking at his résumé how he has helped build programs from the inside out, I think I'd have to hire him," (Isaac) Bruce said by phone from California, where he's in his second year with the San Francisco 49ers after 14 seasons with the St. Louis Rams.
"You've got to have someone to bring that together. People who don't know Larry want to know what all the fuss is about. Here's a Memphis guy with an outstanding résumé, a Memphis guy with a lot of passion who doesn't want to come back and use this job as a stepping stone. This guy wants to see Memphis as an elite program. This is something a lot of us have been waiting for."
people that matter are really pushing Memphis to make this happen.

slowsoftpro, you hit it on the head. he is a positional coach maybe being offered a respectable head coaching job. HE HAS TO TAKE IT. especially since most people (LM excluded) on this board never mention his name as a crowton replacement if crowton is let go. his alternative, if crowton is let go, what does he do, stay as a positional coach for the next 5 years.

Porter is likely gone, and more power to him. I'm just saying when your positional coaches are getting offered HC jobs, that's a huge bargaining point when you're looking for a top of the line replacement.

I don't think LSU can stand to lose Porter and McCarthy in the same year from a recruiting standpoint. if we lose both of them then Davis, Ware, Hunter, Maclin all of these guys they recruited from far away are going to start looking around. 2011 is a huge year in LA., we need our best recruiters.

BUT THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO IF PORTER IS OFFERED A HC; WE MAY BE ABLE TO MATCH A MID LEVEL
OC JOB OFFER.

If Porter leaves, yes it might hurt recruiting some this signing class. However Miles has made good hires in the past, Even when Jimbo left, I believe that Miles would do the same here. As far his couching the RB, I have never once, in his five seasons here, thought the running backs were couched up for any game. IMO we would get a much better RB couch in here.

Do you think we could get a FB ottoman here as well?

Porter will interview for the UM job over the weekend, but there will be at least one more week of interviews with Bud Foster and others. Should Coach Porter be hired, he's going to need some coordinators too with solid scheming and playcalling experience.

I don't believe that is correct. You may be thinking of WR Coach McCarthy, who I believe was the only coach to not receive a raise in the latest rounds of salary increases approved by the BOS last month.

LSU will definitely try to keep him, but fancy titles still aren't the same as being a HC (that is if Memphis and Smith are truly committed to winning and hiring a great staff). If Crowton were to decide to move on, Miles might give Porter some scheming duties during the week and bring in another OC with good QB coaching credentials and gamecalling experience.

I tell you what, Eddie Gran is a guy who used to coach at Auburn, who's in Tennessee, that would probably welcome a job at LSU after dealing with those idiots. He's a good recruiter and a good RB coach. He has relationships in south Florida as well. Food for thought.

Yeah, I know he would really like to get out of UT. Sorry, Tennessee Jed.
