I was in Illinois in the 1950's. hoops was king.

No one ever EVER talked about football at my high school, Rantoul (nearest town to Chanute, the AFB).
But we had 4 starters 6 5" and went to the sweet sixteen.

i think the climate thing could have alot to do with it as well, same with hockey in its respective place

I would say weather and our priorities. A HS student in LA is known for life for how many TD's he scored, not his ACT score.
