I think what the author tried and failed to convey is that the #1 overall ranked player (LF) may end up being merely the 4th or 5th best player at his position when it is all said and done. And the author attributes this to the depth of the running back position.

he also failed to convey that the LT's protecting of the QB is the top priority of the OFFENSE and not the DEFENSE

It's a very new and complex defensive scheme he's referring to. You're just not in the know.
