For those worrying about Zach Lee

28. Zach Lee, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers
Skills they love: He won't sign.
They'll be hoping for production like: I'm sure the Dodgers wish the best for him as a quarterback at LSU.
That is what fangraphs.com, a leading sabermetric website, thought about his future.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but it seems like I've seen about 8 different sources all saying he will end up at LSU.

Dodgers assistant GM 'cautiously optimistic' club will sign McKinney's Zach Lee
quote:
"As the summer plays out, you'll see the effort will be made. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that we're going to get him to sign," White said, according to the report. "It's really going to be Zach's decision."
In the report, White denied the Dodgers selected Lee with no intentions of signing him simply to save money since the team has a track record of not offering eye-popping signing bonuses.
quote:
According to MLB.com , the largest bonus the Dodgers have given a draft pick is $2.3 million. That offer went to former Highland Park pitching standout Clayton Kershaw in 2006. Various reports say Lee is asking anywhere from $3-5 million for a signing bonus.

I believe Kershaw was a little bit bigger of a prospect than Lee is as well

the ESPN article the Morning news got this from says a whole lot more:

quote:
White said Lee plans to follow through with his plans to participate in LSU's summer football workouts, so an agreement with the Dodgers probably isn't imminent.
White wouldn't rule out an agreement that would allow Lee to play football at LSU while playing baseball professionally in the Dodgers' system, but it also didn't sound like the kind of agreement White is eager to enter into.

How in the hell is that possible?

Ricky Williams did this his first year or two at Texas.
quote:
Despite the promise that Williams showed on the football field it was a career on the baseball diamond that he originally chose to pursue right out of high school. While most football fans primarily think of Ricky Williams as a football player for the University of Texas Longhorns before his entrance into the NFL he actually played minor league baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system while at the same time playing football for the UT Longhorns. Ricky was taken in the 1995 baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round.

Interesting, didn't know one could do that

quote:You can get paid and lose eligibility in baseball and still play football. Many guys have tried out the minors (with bonuses and pay) for a few years and then came back to college football. Matt Mauck, Chris Weinke, Josh Booty, to name a few...
Was he not getting paid?

That's exactly what Jamie Howard did while at LSU. He signed with the Braves for like 400k and I think then paid his own way to LSU. Played QB for us and baseball for the Braves in the summers.

Yep, Trajan Langdon played a couple of summers for the Padres and Doug Johnson, the former Florida QB played for a team as well though I don't remember which one. It just means that they are ineligible to play college baseball from that point forward.
One of the many quirks of the NCAA.

Your amateur status in one sport is not linked to your status in another.
You can be a pro baseball player while still maintaining eligibility for college football.

Dennis Dixon (qb for Oregon) also did this I beleive.

Hmmm, what about that pro snowboarder that kicked for Colorado back in the day?
Posted on 6/8/10 at 6:32 pm to Duckie
He enrolled in simmer school. See rant.

He didn't jeopardize his amateur status by being a pro snowboarder, he jeopardized it by getting endorsements to finance his career as a pro snowboarder. Different situations. As soon as you trade on your name, you lose amateur status. As a pro baseball/college football guy you don't trade on your name. (The NCAA and ESPN do it for you)
ETA: Also, he didn't kick, he returned kicks.
