Good luck finding a HS kid with the exact same skillset as an NFL Pro Bowler.

To answer the OPs question Desean Smith is the best looking TE prospect that LSU has had in awhile.

I remember LeFleur being a big boy (wasn't he 6'8"?)...and I also remember the QBs not throwing to him as much as I would have liked.

Because Jimmy Graham-type TEs are so plentiful

Wouldn't St Aug's TE/basketball player be the closest fit?

Actually, yes.

Victor would be a great project TE.

Haven't seen him play, but strictly going off his abilities as a basketball player and his measurables, I'm sure he could be coached into an elite TE.

Buddy told me that if Desean played basketball, he'd be a double-double machine and that he used to kill people on the basketball court before he concentrated on football. In fact, he claimed that if Trey Quinn and Desean hooped, Barbe would be a Top 28 team an those would be their two best players (Quinn was dunking in junior high ball).

Smith's the same height, roughly, as Antonio Gates, the first of the "ex-hoop stars" who became NFL tight ends.

If you want a pipe dream, think of Mettenberger going play action with Leslie running a go at 6-4 on one side, Seals-Jones running the a post at 6-5 on the other and Smith at 6-4/6-5 going up the seam. Right now, when they do that, it's 5-11, 6-foot and a 6-5 blocking TE.

It's going to be a little bit harder these days to get another Jimmy Graham in our neck of the woods, though not impossible. I'm finding that where 20 years ago the 6-foot-6 kid was automatically going to play basketball, these days I'm finding that the 6-6 black kid is thinking of being a mid-skill guy (TE, DE) in football and the white 6-6 kid is taking the ball to the bump and pitching if he has any kind of arm.

Now, having said that, I think Bridgewater, Gathers and maybe the St. Aug. kid all would have done themselves a favor by picking football over hoops, so those kids still exist, just less likely.

Not sure why TE's are not utilized more in college - I guess there needed for blocking more and more

Hell, the University of Miami's football program didn't even have a Jimmy Graham type recruit when Jimmy Graham was being recruited.

Smith and Quinn were very good basketball players, and once led their middle school team to an undefeated season, with Melvin Jones as the power forward! All three were special talents. I think Smith played basketball his freshman year. Quinn has not played in high school. I am not sure about Melvin.

Smith is every bit of 6'5", has great hands, and will give the LSU offense a much added dimension!

How fast is Jacory Washington?

Not sure he runs a 4.53. Even if he does I'm not sure can he can add 50 pounds and still maintain his speed.

JG is 6'6 260 and runs a 4.53. That is incredible.
