i think surrency used to play for this 4v4 flag football team known as 'MOB,' they were widely recognized as the best 4man team in the nation...won a few $10k cash tournaments in their hey day a few years back. i saw him play once and he was lights out, as you would expect a player of his caliber to be in that setting.

not really, there's thousands of kids out there who fricked up their lives with felonies... is this one special because he happens to be able to play football?

From what I saw of him for FSU this year, he looked pretty shitty imo.

Hmmm... well as much as I think the rule is necessary but stupid when applied to this case, I don't think this rule is a reason that he couldn't finish his degree.

Considering he only has one year to go, I don't see why he wouldn't be able to get a Pell Grant if his financial situation is as dire as they make it out be and then take out student loans to cover the rest of the cost like nearly every other student needs to do.

As far as him being a "thug", he seems like to me that he committed those crimes when he was a kid/teen and looks to have turned his life around. It's not like he's doing this stuff while he's playing for the team, unless I"m missing something.

The NCAA's "no kid left behind rule" in reverse.

The rule seems pretty clear cut. Same rules for everybody.

Except not. Matt Mauck and Chris Weinke didn't lose eligibility for playing minor league baseball. Erazem Lorbek and Engin Atsur didn't lose eligibility for playing professional basketball.

Don't know about Weinke, Lorbek or Astur, but Mauck probably ended his pro baseball career before his 21st birthday. He only played 3 years and considering his 18th birthday was in Feb 1997, he could have played all three seasons before his 21st b-day in 2000.

Matt Mauck

Sucks for this guy. Guess we are better off for not having signed him.

You're absolutely right about Mauck, but Chris Weinke played minor league baseball until 1996. He was born in 1972. Lorbek and Atsur were both under 21 when they played as well, but they were on the payrolls of legit professional teams in their home countries.

I was just replying to the other poster, who said that the rules were clear-cut. That would be one of the last adjectives I would use.

Cant he still fulfill that promise? He may have to get a job, or at the very least dont commit any more felonies.

He is still a f**king thug, why feel sorry for him?? Just like Michael (idiot) Vick...he never was anything close to being a saint before the dog-fighting incident, why should they get extra benefits just because they play(ed) football?? If they have truly turned their lives around, then let them earn it in the REAL working world like the rest of us...
