Dude....did you miss the part where I said Chavis as LBer coach/DC has to OK HIS POSITION players to be signed. I never said he was the primary recruiter because he was NOT.

quote:

And yeah, as LBer coach and DC, I can promise you that all these guys signed with Chavis blessing.

But you don't know how recruiting works if you don't think he not only OKed the guys to go after but also signed off on the commits...for sure the LBers. That is like saying Cam Cameron doesn't direct which QBs to go after. To believe otherwise is utter nonsense!

Yes, LSU MISSED some DBs also but a lot of guys like that end up as special teamers, etc. Once again, I gave you a very long list of LBers and he whiffed on most of them. He evaluated talent badly and got obsessed with "hyprid LBers". He also decided late in his career at LSU that LSU didn't need LBers to speak of...only 2 signed last year and 0 committed this year. He decided to utilize a bunch of CBs and S instead along with tiny LBers.

Bottom line: Chavis was overrated as a DC and batting .250 with his LBer signees is hardly going to get him in the Hall of Fame huh?

Love the idea of Garret at MLB and Beckwith OLB. Beckwith blitzing would be nasty. Maybe it happens

The knock on McGinnis is his inability to cover RBs and TEs. I know chief spent a ton of time with him at a camp, and I believe he even stayed an extra day to work. Many thought he was getting an offer, but it never came.

Just looked at Arthur McGinnis HUDL video for the first time. I agree with his good offer sheet by many major schools. I would rate the guy a low 4* (5.8 on Rivals) and certainly better than his medium 3* rating by the services. Didn't see him in pass coverage but certainly knows to destroy a returner, run down the QB and RBs. And when he hits...you stay hit!

God, I am soooo glad that Chavis is gone! I bet he held it against McGinnis that he wasn't like 205 pounds. What a d--k!

Huh? That's not really true... Especially considering that Chief didn't do that much recruiting. And they put Beckwith at DE in hopes to get him on the field sooner his freshman year. It was known he was gonna switch back to LB.

Chief was here from 2009-2014. LBers we had during that timespan: Kelvin Sheppard, Perry Riley, Kevin Minter, Lamin Barrow, Kwon Alexander, Beckwith. And Chief was a big reason why we got Garrett.

If you wanna bitch about the Welter / Beckwith saga 2 seasons ago and early on this past season, that's fine and valid. Was Beckwith ready to start at MLB as a true freshman and call the D? Maybe. Maybe not. But when it was obvious that Beckwith was better this past season and made our D better, Chief didn't hesitate to make the switch. And nobody knows what Beckwith would have looked like as a true freshman... But it's hard to imagine he would had been worse than Welter.

Majority of the LBers we had when Chavis was here excelled under him. And, like I said, he didn't do too much recruiting so you can't say that Chavis screwed up time and time again signing LBers. If you think we have made bad LBer signings the last few years, it's most likely someone else that recruited them.

In regards to McGinnis... Who knows why we haven't offered him. Hopefully it means the staff expects us to land some big LBer prospects. Maybe they know something we don't know about McGinnis. Who knows? And our staff has interacted with these guys way more than we have. If we don't offer him it's because they don't want him. Simple as that. And I'm OK with that.

Sheppard and Riley (along with Odom and Cutrera) were part of the 2006 class.

LB signed:

06 - 4
07 - 0
08 - 2

Chavis is DC:

09 - 3 (Barrow, Jones, Minter)
10 - 2 (Muncie, Welter)
11 - 1 (Randle)
12 - 5 (K. Alexander, Feist, Granier, Jones, Phillips)
13 - 3 (Beckwith, Melvin Jones (moved to FB), Duke Riley)
14 - 2 (D. Alexander, Garrett)

The majority of LBs under Chavis did not excel. If Chavis did not have a hand in recruiting players for his system then shame on him (and Miles). Of course he had a hand in recruiting, but just not active on the visits.

Maybe LSU's scheme under Chavis did not attract a continuous supply of quality LBs. There numbers are there, but many were 3 stars.

It is the development of the diamonds in the rough that count more in my book.
