It's painfully obvious that we can't expect The Fence to get us to a NC. Especially not while losing key 5 and 4 star talent OOS. We lean heavily on TX and FL, but otherwise rarely outside of SEC boundaries.

It's worked well in the past but with Herman now at UT, Florida getting raided by everyone, the question begs:

Are we being too insular? Are we leaving too many good 5 and 4 stars outside of the South on the table? We complain about Bama, but they offer kids from all over the USA, same with Auburn and Tennessee. The argument is the lack of talent in those states. But now they're now getting some of the top talent here in LA.

Maybe local kids wouldn't jack us around so much if they had to compete with more potential recruits.

O was in Cali, Aranda up north and now Canada in the Northeast. There have to be some relationships.

I'm just of the opinion that The Fence is going to be harder than ever to protect. I don't see a NC without more national recruits. Thoughts?

Under Miles, we'll pulled guys from the Midwest, Georgia, and Carolinas, as well as TX, MS, and FL. We'll see if those pipelines hold up under Orgeron and company.

Bama has to offer kids from all over the US because they don't have the talent LA has plus they compete with Auburn for their in state 3*s
They are also competing with UGA, FSU, UF, Clemson, and TN for those same players. LSU has a huge advantage as far as recruiting goes.

The Midwest schools also don't have nearly the talent that LA and TX have and have to look nationally. I look at Houston as an extension of Louisiana (recruiting wise) because those kids are more LSU than UT and unless they're into butt-stuff, have no interest in A&M.

I'm all about LSU pulling a 5* from anywhere in the country, but if we had to, we could be consistent top 5 (talent wise) team with just our in-state and Houston area recruiting. We just have to stop the bleeding of our most talented players to Alabama. IMO there's no excuse to lose Cam Robinson, Hootie, Landon, Moses, Williams, and Allen to a damn out of state rival.

Houston has more UT fans than LSU fans. There are plenty of kids and schools pro LSU there, but Houston is still a big UT city. With Herman there, it will be much harder to get top kids from Houston. The upside is they can only take 25.

(First, kudos to the OP. Great topic and well-written.)

here's my thoughts:
a) There is such a proliferation of talent in LA that we can't sign them all. And there will be those who go elsewhere, find their spot, get on the field early, and excel and we'll wonder how he got away, e.g., Dak.

b) Even in the best of times there will other programs who are having a "run" who will pick off some elite talent from time-to-time. Examples, Perrilloux was committed to TX until Les was hired. The late Joe McKnight chose USC in '06 (?). IIRC, Landon Collins chose Bama after the GOTC and before 1/9. At that time Les had won two in a row vs Bama and held a 3-2 advantage over Nick head-to-head.

Point being, we were not down, these were great talents, and they were going elsewhere (of course Ryan P. reversed course).

c) Bama more than anyone else is getting some top shelf LA talent. Part of that is Saban has ties here and Bama has a great run going. IMO, the bigger factor is that we haven't made a good faith effort to show that we're going to compete with them and compete for championships. We've become a consistent 3-loss program. Until we demonstrate that we're going to compete with Bama I don't see this changing.

Consider if you're the HS coach of an elite talent. Bama offers. What do you tell this kid? You may love LSU but you also love your players and want what's best for them. They can get to the NFL through Tuscaloosa as well as Red Stick. But if you're interested in championships and individual awards Bama is a better opportunity right now.

That's what we have to change. That's what we have to show the players, coaches of LA.

IMO, I think CEO got it right (which made it mind numbing why we offered Tua). We need to focus on LA and the I-10 corridor. That's our long term ticket for success. Once we we're a top-5 program again, we can cherry-pick nationally.

Bama is the only team that consistently raids LA talent and that will continue as long as they sit atop the college world. Great recruiters can only get you so far. Product on the field sways kids. We can tout putting kids in the NFL and that is a good equalizer. Beat Bama and take Saban down a peg and the tide will turn.

UP ARROW x 1,000!

Gotta have it. Until we do, difficult to compete for those types of recruits.

In pure numbers you are right. But Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama all have had years recently where they had more players drafted than Louisiana.

AlwaysATiger, great comment. I fully agree that in past years we haven't shown we are ready to commit fully to mounting a challenge to Bama (legal recruiting resources, coaching staff, blunders such as Dak, etc)

We keep our 4 and 5 star guys at home and not at Bama, the field becomes a bit more level (although with most head to head battles Bama "wins" those players haven't always been difference makers for them. A few, yes, but Bama's game with LSU is more to keep players from us, rather than them contributing for them)

And they do it in a way that plays havoc at late stages of the process. This is not by accident. One thing you can safely say is that we haven't punked Bama with AL recruits, nearly as much as they have us with Boot recruits.

Part of The Fence thing is stopping this. This seems to be the norm now. These players are not simply choosing Bama, they're rubbing salt and Tabasco in the LSU programs recruiting wounds. This will take time, but eventually it has to be fixed.

Or, they could be like Don Shows in Monroe was ." All screw it geaux to LSU son..." LOL! In order to compete with them we have to get the players at that level whether they are in La. or not.
