once a week? Is it just bs to conserve water?

Undoubtedly that would also bring in more fungus issues

Because they also put 40lbs of chemicals/ sqft to maintain the problems that come with watering every day.

Also to some extent, their grass is bred for it as well as a team that manages the grass every day.

Had a former neighbor who maintaned part of his 'estate' as a putting green with a couple tee boxes. Was damn near a full time job when he got home every day.

Once a week in the summer? Who says to do this?

I bet the short grass especially on the greens is quite vulnerable to drying out compared to a typical lawns' 2-3 inch height

Root growth mirrors blade growth. Because a golf course gets mowed every day, the roots are shallow and have to be watered or the grass would die

They have money? I could leave our water running 24/7 and no one would care as long as we pay the town bill. The one thing SE Louisiana has going for it is the abundance of water, worrying about water is the least of my worries down here.

Golf greens that are built to USGA spec are 10-12" sand with a peat or profile product mix either 90/10 or 80/20 mix. California style greens are straight sand. this provides a firm base that drains well. I water greens every other night as well as every other part of my golf course. I rotate greens / tees / fairways one night and green surrounds and Rough the next. in drought times we may kick it up to a 2-3 night in a row on greens based on how they are holding up. We drag hose for hotspots where needed. An no we don't dump 40lbs/ sqft of chemicals to keep them alive. We are sustaianable and environmental concious of our surrounds. and 90% of the new "chemicals" have low use rates and reduce leaching potential.

I think I have watered grass 3 times in the 30 some odd years I have owned a house. One of those was during a 100 year drought. I do not want the shite growing any faster than it already does.

Appreciate your expertise. So it sounds like to get things growing more , we do in fact need to be watering more than the conventional once a week.. Correct?

I don't think once a week is conventional

Regardless, he is at least 3 times a week. That definitely isn’t conventional

When I used to set up irrigation systems lawns were every other day, sometimes every 3rd day depending on sunlight.

Never set them up for just once a week.

Well that is different. Never hear of anyone recommending to water every other day

It partially depends on your soil. If you have a clay base that retains water you need to water much less than a sand base which drains water away much faster. It depends on the grass type and mow height, etc. How hot does it get where you live? That makes a difference too... You see where I am going with this?

Guys, my golf greens are built on 12" sand and tees and fairways are sand capped with 6" sand. If I was in native soil, I would water deep and infrequent. watch your turf. if you water too much the roots won't drive deep, they will stay shallow. Soil is everything. but deep watering is your friend

How often do you mow your fairways, roughs, and greens? and what grass types are used year round? And what zone is your golf course in?

The thought of watering my lawn didn't cross my mind when I lived in LA. First house in The Woodlands and I figured just leave the sprinkler off, it's not important....Boy was I wrong. Your yard will be completely brown mid summer if you don't water where I live. Then it'll be all dirt and weeds come winter. The soil doesn't hold water at all here. It can rain Monday and the grass will look starved of water by Thursday.

Live rural? Grew up out in the country and don’t recall ever watering grass but now in suburbia it seems to need it after a few days of no rain.

Yeah, I get that. I know if I lived just across the river(red) I would be singing a different tune. This red river bottomland just rarely needs watering for St. Aug.
