Mine was struggling yesterday evening and noticed it was blowing warm…. Shut it down for about 15 minutes and it seemed to start blowing cool again. Checked the temps with my infrared thermometer and it was between 62-66 after it got dark but been more like lower 70’s in the heat of the day

To my knowledge, the air coming out of the vent should be way less than low 70s.

You likely need to clean your condensing unit.

You want about a 20 degree split between your return temp and vent temp.

Im at around 15 or so I think.

Is that spray cleaner for condensers that HD and Lowe’s sell worth using?

low 70s

It’s mostly been in the mid-upper 60’s.

Does sound like you may have had a slightly frozen evaporator coil, indicating you could be a little low on refrigerant. But you should have a cooler temperature than the low 70s, during the day, exiting the nearest supply register to the furnace/air handler. A temperature split of 16-20 F would be considered, to a tech, acceptable in this heat.

I just measured my nearest supply register with an infrared thermometer (5:50 pm) and it’s 57 F (probe thermometer would be more accurate). My split right now with the return grill is 16 F. Attic temperature is 121 F - those supply ducts are picking up heat from that hot attic.

But I agree do the simple things first, clean the outside condensing coil, make sure you have a clean, and not a high MERV 1 inch thick return grill filter, and see if that helps.

I’ll have to run to Home Depot and get some of that coil cleaner soon.

I don’t think it helps that my unit is on the side of my house that gets pretty brutal afternoon/early evening sun

It doesn't make that much of a difference. The air temp is still what it is

Checked vent temp last week with a cheap thermometer and it was showing between 53-56. A/C was set on 71.

Be careful with that coil cleaner. I used some on a couple of window units and it ate up the fins...

As high as 71 when it's really boiling arse hot mid day.

32 year old unit, so the fact that it's cooling at all is a win in my book.

Can still take a hose and just spray from the inside out. I would put an attachment that has a shower setting on it

Even brand new units don’t get more than a 15 or so degree split between room and vent temp.

I find that the spray condenser cleaner works pretty well for cleaning, but it obviously can’t fix an undersized or worn out unit.

Just don't take a hose nozzle to the fins. High volume, low pressure when you rinse. I just cleaned a friend's unit, the split was 10 degrees before hand, 22 degrees after. Suction and head pressures were good after cleaning, no added refrigerant needed. It makes more of a difference than you'd think.

72 degrees on infrared thermo coming out of the register during the hottest part of the day. Coils are clean and the system is about 12 years old. 5 ton unit with terrible duct work that was done by our builder’s AC guy.
