I'm finally having Tiftuf Bermuda installed in my backyard this week.

I don't have an irrigation system, but do have 3 Rainbird 5004 sprinkler heads on spikes placed along my patio aimed at the rectangular shaped yard. One is in West corner, one is in the middle, and one is in the East corner. They all face out towards the yard and overlap some. I'm using 2gal rain curtain nozzles(mostly b/c some guy on YouTube said these were the nozzles he used lol)

I bought a Rachio wifi hose end timer, but don't know how I should schedule the waterings. 3x a day? For how long each cycle? How many times a day? Not at night right? I read it's bad for the grass.

I'm in North Dallas, TX. Clay soil if that makes a difference. I don't want to screw this up.

Bermuda grass is very resilient. It's a good drought grass although it does need water like everything else. However it doesn't need the same amount as say fescue. Water it in the morning before sun it baking the area directly. Water it in the evening after the sun is baking it directly until the roots have taken a firm hold you'll know because you can try and lift a piece. After that.. you'll need to use your best judgment.. based on your Water bill and if it's changing colors or not and also the season of the year but honestly in most areas of the south.. after it's rooted in well it will not need daily water. Georgia resident here.. no sprinkler system mine does fine through the entire summer with little to 0 water help overall. Bermuda is over all a very easy to maintain grass.. if you can even call it a grass haha.. you'll have to worry more about weeds . Next spring.

Also nitrogen based fertilizer does well with bermuda unlike many other grass! It's also cheaper usually!

Water the new sod every morning for the first two weeks. After that about every other day for the next week or so.

Will do. How long should I water? 30 mins? And is once a day ok? I've been reading stuff all over the place like 5 & 6 times a day, even in the evenings, but you're actually in Dallas and know what you're talking about, so I'm going to defer to you. Thanks!

Just want to keep the sod wet. Watering once a day for about 30 minutes should be plenty based on current temps. Watering more than once a day is usually the protocol for July/August when we are 105 with blue bird skies for multiple days in a row.

That sounds like a new seed watering schedule.

The Bermuda was put in today. The company told me to water 3 times a day at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm for 30 mins each. They said with an irrigation system, they'd recommend 10 mins each, but since I'm using 3 Rainbird 5004 heads on spikes, to water for 30 mins to make sure it's getting moist enough. They said to do this for 2 weeks.

Do this sound right? I just want to make sure the Bermuda establishes, but I don't want to over water either

I would water all at once in the morning. This would allow the water to trickle deep into the soil so the roots seek out the water below the surface and will better establish. I’m no expert, but that’s how I think about it.

Can’t say how long to water, but try to water enough to allow your soil to remain moist throughout the entire day.

I'm just concerned once a day watering won't keep it moist for 24 hrs. I'm at work now, but will test it out this weekend by checking under a square of sod

3 times a day is overkill when the high is upper 70's/low 80's.

That's what I thought. I'll limit to twice a day. I'm going to get sprinkler gauges this weekend to see how much is being put down in a cycle too.

The sod was yellow when they installed it on 4/17. The installers said Bermuda hasn't really greened up yet.

I've been watering early morning and early afternoon. I check the soil under the sod and it's moist, but not wet. Should I be watering more?

I didn't water at all yesterday since it stormed all day. Should I water today at all? Just worried about overwatering.

Also, is it weird that the sod is still yellow? Or has it just not been hot enough really?

It should have greened up by now at the sod farm. The yellowing may have been because it sat for a few days before installing.

That said, no need to worry. Try to stay off of it so you don’t disturb the rooting process. If you got a lot of rain water yesterday then that’s great. If you don’t water today, be sure to water tomorrow.

Don’t water. It rained for 12 straight hours yesterday. Do you know how long it was from cut to laid? My yard is at 90% green up and I’m in dfw.

I don't know. It was delivered about 11:00 am on Wed 4/17 and the crew got here about 12:30. The sod was golden. The guy told me it wasn't greened up yet, but that if would . It's greening up lightly here and there, but still goldeny. It's not dried out though. I guess I'll give it some more time and see how it looks by this Wednesday.

Are there any other tiftuf lawns you could look at locally to see if they’re greened up yet?
Maybe the sod came from Oklahoma where maybe it was still dormant.
I would think that just by cutting sod that it would be stressed and turn off-color for a time. But not as soon as it’s delivered, unless it was not freshly cut.
Did you see any Tiftuf before you decided on it? I’ve only seen pictures and it’s pretty, but from the comments from others, it’s not the greenest of the hybrids.
Just give it time. Maybe some iron if that’s appropriate.
