Very new to gardening. I have a raised bed behind out garage with cucumbers, tomatoes and bells. Recently, the leaves on the tomatoes and bells have been disappearing. I have scanned the plants for critters, especially caterpillars, and nothing. I even went out late last night in the dark with a light. Ideas?

Anytime I have whole leaves disappearing from my tomatoes it's always a hornworm. Just have to find him and remove him.

Yeah, if the leaves are disappearing and not just falling off the plant onto the ground, definitely a hornworm. They can be tough to spot sometimes. They blend in with the plants really well.

Its likely a hornworm and they blend in very good. Spray BT all over your leaves and the hornworms will die after a while

It's hornworms. Rage war with no remorse.

I can't believe you still have tomato and bell pepper plants. Mine were done a month ago due to the heat.

Can a hornworm take out an entire plant in a 24 hour period? Pretty sure one got to my purple cherokee. i figured maybe it was a deer.

They are watered almost every day and only get a few hours of direct sun.

Worms will leave tell tell signs of tiny black turds on adjoining leaves. Deer will enter your garden and eat a few leaves and leave. Okra is one of their favorites. Check for deer tracks.

Deer aren't an issue in this neighborhood, though we did buy a raised bed due to the freaking rabbits.

As the others say, your problem is likely a hornworm or two. Look for little brown turds under the plant. When you find turds, look directly above them on the plant. You’ll feel silly when you finally see it, because it is so big. You’ve gotta look good, though.

Have found a few by noticing a branch moving or more like shaking. Just tending garden and seeing movement on a still day?

Reading glasses help.

UV flashlight my guys - hornworms (like scorpions) glow brightly under that blacklight.

You'll be shocked at how many you find. Smash 'em or feed them to chickens.
