The drought last year hit my St Augustine yard pretty hard. So I am patching areas with sod.

Last year I did some dirt work in my back yard and put down some sod. It got gray leaf spot pretty bad from the frequent watering the first couple of weeks. So I am prophylactically treating the new sod with propiconizole.

Would it be ok give it a little bit of fertilizer in the first week, or should I wait? I was thinking of just spreading a little milorganite. Would something else be better for helping the roots establish? Also, how long should I wait before mowing over the area? I don't really remember what I did last year, but I'm pretty sure I waited a while just to be safe.

Why not go higher in P and K?
A true starter fert will do that.

Your sod shouldn’t need fertilizer for the first few weeks.

They make root growth stimulant products, which is basically just Humic acid and Sea Kelp. That would work.

Holding off on mowing allows the new grass root into your existing soil, so you don’t want to disturb that process. If you stay on top of the watering process, you should be good to mow after 2 weeks for patches. If you’re sodding a big section, then I’d wait a month.

That’s why I asked. I just wasn’t sure what the best protocol was or if higher P and K were necessary. What would be a good NPK ratio? Should I just put down some triple 13?

Thanks for all of that!

I’ll hold off on the fert for now. I do have some humic. So I’ll give them a little of that.

”Starter Fertilizer” is mainly for seed. It is high in Phosphorus (the second number), which promotes root growth (which is what you want) and should be around 25. Potassium (the third number) is for overall health and you’ll normally see this around 10 with starter ferts.

Triple 13 is fine, but having phosphorus number over 5 runs the risk of building too much thatch to already established lawns. I just wouldn’t use that as my regular fertilizer every year.

My first thought was “buy some RGS from Yard Mastery” but talk about a touchy subject

I’m trying their products currently.

Why is it a touchy subject? What did I miss?

Snake oil? (Although the ingredients in RGS are proven to work)

I used RGS on my new Tifway sod last year and thought it worked very well. I also used their 13-13-13 on it.

I've been pleasantly surprised by their products, but I'm not a YM fanboy or anything. I like trying all kinds of different products by different companies.

I plan on putting down some Anderson's PGF complete soon.

The liquid aeration products are the ones that tend to get the most controversy. Otherwise everything else may have some benefit, but plenty people also have great lawns just doing standard npk applications and possible pgr if you're into it.

Yes, it always seems to be controversial. Probably more on TLF than here.

I was referring to RGS specifically, but it applies to any biostimulant from the N-ext line of products. Yes, Air-8 gets the most hate.

I use it. I’ll reevaluate in the fall.

Gotcha.

LCN (Lawn Care Nut) who is the Owner of YM did some testing on a bunch of bio-stiumlant products with some Zoysia plugs - LINK

Friendly reminder: NPK is up, down, all around. N-push growth, P-develop stronger roots, K-overall health.
