I’m getting ready to build a covered patio not attached to house. I’m probably going to use 4x4 square tubing for post to make a 20x16 patio cover. Can I bolt the 4x4 post to concrete using anchors, or do I need to set post in concrete? Will it make much of a difference?

Id probably put some anchors in the concrete.

I realize this is a pole light, but this is the setup id use.

I have 3 x 3 post on my patio cover and I welded 6 x 6 plates to the bottom and anchored them with a 1/2 x 6 wedge anchor. Just make sure to dig a footing wherever you are going to put a post to give the anchor enough concrete to grab onto.

This is one of those things where it looks like a good idea and will be kind of a set and forget type of thing but the reality is that concrete will rot steel as surely as it does wood. Might take longer but the end result is the same. I thought about doing much the same in my future deck build but after a lot of research and thinking I'm going with concrete footers and properly galvanized steel post bases to set 4x4 posts with. One thing that concrete does very well is that it wicks moisture and you do not want to set plain steels or wood on it without an air gap.

Yes, but significantly easier to set them in concrete when you pour the slab. Go get yourself a good electric hammer drill and a crap load of bits. I added a cover to my patio a few years ago and enclosed one side, used something like 20 anchor bolts, burned through about 10 mason bits at $20 each.
