Hello friends, the wife and I are looking to put in some nice stone pavers on a 15' x 6' area outside the backyard. Along with this we are having a flowerbed installed (clay removed, dirt installed) on a 5' by 35' area. I've had two quotes thus far, one at 18,000$ and one at $12,000. Have I lost my mind or is this insanely high?
I will add they have to level the area where the pavers go, which has a slight decline, maybe 1 foot total decline from left to right.

Have they given you an itemized quote?? Alot of factors in any price so that should help out.
Edited to add: I would honestly just skip the gym for a week or two and do it myself. That is some serious coin and you wouldn't be paying all the self-employment taxes/fees that these guys have to build into their quotes.

Sounds about right. Let me guess, $12k is from a new, just starting out guy and $18k is a long established place?
We had someone reconstruct our front flower beds and strip between the walk up/driveway plus he added pavers. He also put in some irrigation for the front yard and flower bed. It was about $13,000.

Do it yourself and live with a sore lower back for 3 days.

Get plants from forest hills. Lots of nursery’s that way that sell for a cheaper price. I’m doing it myself and I’m saving tons of money compared to what it would have cost me to pay someone to do it.

I paid $5000 last year for a 30’ x 4’ flower bed. That included clearing, dirt and mulch. I already had the garden irrigation ready to go, supplied the pavers, purchased and installed the plants myself.

Small areas of pavers have lots of cuts, and waste. You will pay significantly more per square foot.

How much of that was for the dirt/mulch?? And how much did you get?? Raised beds or in ground??
I have a 30x7 bed project coming up soon. New dirt, a little leveling, etc. Nothing fancy or super precise. Curious to see how much a DIY would save

I'm missing something here. This seems like a crazy amount of money to remove some grass, throw some dirt down and then top with mulch. This isn't that large of an area. What am I missing?

slightly raised, maybe 4". Dug down a foot to remove all the shitty clay that was piled up since its next to the pool. I think it was 6 yards of soil they brought in. Just that part was $3000, then the pavers. I also forgot they cleaned up the rest of my gardens and mulched too which was probably $500.
