I've narrowed my choices down to Gravely and John Deere. I definitely want a commercial grade mower that will last me a while. I have about 7 acres of relatively flat land the cut.

Whatever I end up with has to have a Kawasaki engine and at least a 60" deck.

I've gotten my choices down to these two models:

- John Deere Z950M ZTrak with a 27hp motor

- Gravely Mach1

For those of you who are familiar, what are some of the pros and cons between these two mowers?

Have you had any bad experience with any of the service departments when it comes to honoring the warranty?

What are some of the common issues that each of these mowers have?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Not that I'm not a Scag fan. I just haven't seen any at any of the places I've looked at.

What makes you prefer Gravely over John Deere?

Do some research on those big block Kawasaki’s before committing. They had lots of issues with them several years ago when I was looking for a new mower, maybe they are better now.
If I had to choose between those, get the Gravely, it will be a little faster and has more hp.

Other than more power and a better built engine, are there other pros to getting a diesel?

I know they're more expensive to repair and maintain if something goes wrong with them.

Power, life of the motor and fuel efficiency are the big ones.

7 acres is a good chunk. The first time you let it get a little overgrown, you're going to wish you had a diesel.

I cut 5-6 acres in the country. I don't get to maintain it like a typical yard. I have a 60" kubota diesel and it eats it up, overgrown or not. Gas doesn't have the same ability.

ETA: If Skag has a dealer around you, I would check them out. Seem to have the best overall reviews. My Kubota is a beast, but the I think the Skag is supposed to have a better deck and leave a better cut.

The JD 7iron deck is supposed to be very good as well.

Hustler if you don't.

gotta call BS on this one. I mow 8-10 acres on the reg. Kubota with a Kawa gas engine. It handles the cutting with no problems. I have no doubt your diesel is a beast. But the gas burner does just as good a job.

You can call bullshite all you'd like.

Whatever type of grass is there, it's a former horse farm, is absolute hell. I've cut it with a grasshopper gasser, not sure of the hp and a 24 hp diesel.

If I stay on top of it, obviously not a problem. But if it goes 3 or 4 weeks, there is a significant difference.

24hp is 24hp no matter the fuel type. You can get a 38-40 gas EFI engine on a commercial Z for less money than a 24hp diesel that won’t do as good a job.

The Mach 1 has the old Everride Tunnel Hull deck in it and it’s meant to cut tall grass fast but you will give up some quality of cut with the Mach 1. Just depends on how picky you are about your lawn.

Right, and torque is torque.

A diesel will put out more torque than a comparable gas engine.

It'll do it while burning less fuel than a gas engine and it'll last two or three times as long as the gas engine.

How often does someone burn up an engine on a lawnmower? Most everything else on the mower will break twice before a 17-30hp gas burner goes out even with only changing the oil once every year or so.

Not often.

But if it's something you're going to keep for the long haul, it's worth noting. I don't think commercial units have any problem reaching those hour thresholds. Time will tell on mine at least.

I have the JD 930 M, 60" for 3 years, no problems what so ever, keep 5-8 acres of country yard up, with the occasional running it down some trails in the back, it is a beast

Had a Gravely mid level prior to the JD and it was problematic from the get go, was probably not enough mower for what we used it for so not an equal comparison but the JD commercial grade is awesome

and is also much heavier, meaning your yard will have to dry out more before using to avoid ruts and will get stuck in lesser situations

if you have a bulk diesel tank for your tractor it sure does make it easier to refuel and not have to worry with jerry cans

I had a john deere z950m with the kawa 27hp 60 inch deck and had no problems at all cutting a 5 acre pasture, reguardless of height. Not to mention the 7iron deck is at the top of the list when it comes to cut quality.
Just make sure to get the suspention seat and twills on whatever you decide.
Also read over warranty on both, make sure it is bumber to bumper on entire mower. Johndeere is others arent..

John Deere and Scag are the best because of their decks.

The 7 Iron (Deere) and the Velocity Plus (Scag) will out cut any other decks on the planet, hands down. Any type of grass, any conditions.

I owned a commercial mowing business (my guys didn't touch residential lawns) and I have tried them all.
