Just curious what would make more sense. Our house is too big for our 5 ton central air. Would a 3 ton addition or a double zone mini-split system be better, cost and utility wise? Tia

I don't have the answer but, if you get a ductless heat pump, there is a 30% tax credit up to $2000.

Is that what a Manual J heat load calculation shows - that 5 ton unit is inadequate? LINK. Is your duct work sized properly to deliver 5 tons of cooling capacity (manual D calculation) - don’t assume that is, duct work is commonly undersized for tonnage installed.

Do you have a leaky, under-insulated house, fixing those issues would likely be cheaper than installing an additional HVAC system.

Single story or 2? House size (conditioned area), year built?

Do you prefer a heat pump (mini-split) to a a more conventional split AC with furnace for heating?

Bottom line, you’ve provided so little information on your house no one can really answer your question.

Mini-Spilts are fine units, but beware many techs are not highly experienced in working on them should you have issues.

Thanks for your reply, I'll provide what I know.

Duct work was proper in 1996 when house was built. Not sure if recs changed tbh.

House is somewhat leaky, been fixing what I could find.

2 story but most of the house is downstairs. About 2800sf.

Not happy with insulation, attic especially. Gradually adding to it. Have a small area foamed. Thinking of doing the rest.

Grandkids in and out all day doesn't help I'm sure.

That's it. Again thanks for your reply.
