Howdy all,

Baton Rouge area, two days of rain since beginning of June, equals very dead Centipede grass. I am anticipating a very nice mixture of weeds come spring time, but no Centipede.

I care enough to want to throw some seed down in the spring, but not enough to sod.

Currently looking at Bermuda and either Emerald Zoysia or Zoysia Zeon. I believe that Zeon has to be sod or plugs though.

Sandy soil with 3 medium oak trees in front yard. No dog currently, but will be getting a puppy soon.

What seed should I be looking at for quick growth, drought tolerant, shade tolerant, and can handle a dog in the backyard? I will put preemergent down this winter to help prepare as well.

Did you spread sand or dirt before spreading seed?

Zoysia. Maybe centipede if only partial shade but zoysia is the clear winner here. St Aug is an option if can sod only the shaded spots.

Bermuda or Zoysia

If you’re willing to pay for it, and baby the shite out of the seed for a month, Zoysia is fantastic option. You’re very limited on seed choices and it’s not cheap.

How much lawn are we talking about? Growing a lawn from seed can be very difficult. I’ve spent a lot on seeds, sprinklers, timers, and water hoses, plus all the sweat and time to prep.

If you have centipede now, and it’s not a huge area, centipede sod is pretty cheap in comparison to anything. <$150 for 450 sqft of coverage.
