Anyone have experience with whole-house water filtration systems?

Our water is super hard. It’s staining porcelain tubs and toilets, and is giving our tankless water heaters hell. It concerns me about drinking and cooking, as well.

What kind of money would I need to spend to address the water with a filtration system? What technology is best? Brands?

And no, I’m not moving this to the home and garden board.

I swapped my water taps out with whiskey taps.

Hard water is calcium carbonate dissolved in your water. No amount of filtering will get it out. To do that, you need a chemical reaction. What you need is a water softener not a filter.

I looked at some that are hard water only (not actual water purifier). Haven’t pulled trigger but there are some just for hard water that don’t do all the other filtration.

Fwiw I found a small inline one for water hose and washing car and boat that works great.

Hard water is not a health hazard at all. However hardness does frick up heating elements.

A pretty decent list

It seems like it could contribute to kidney stones.

This.

We have a whole house filtration system to purify our water but it remains hard and is awful on faucets, shower heads, coffee pot insides, etc. You need a water softener. We didn't get one because I hate the feel of softened water. But I now regret we didn't get one and at some point if I replace all my expensive faucets I will get a softener!

We tried and it was a pain to find some local entity that would tell us what to do and sell it. There were a bunch of national companies trying to pitch us a package - all with mixed reviews, and then a bunch of local companies who said they'd install whatever we decided on (but we had no idea what we needed).

We didn't have hard water so it was really just for purification. Ended up just going with an RO system for the kitchen, which we all love.

Have it in our new house. Feels like you can't ever wash the soap off of you

I have the whole home system from Aquasana and my family loves it. Our initial complaint was from high chlorine content in our tap water. Filling a bathtub smelled like a pool prior to getting the system. Now it’s free of any smell and we don’t notice any dry skin like we did before.

Depends on your budget

Your can go with a Reverse osmosis system or you can go with a salt based softener system

There are many cartridge style softener systems out there

Hard water will have a greater impact on hot water systems as hot water can hold more dissolved solids. When it cools those solids will precipitate out. Fouling up exchangers.

I had a combo filter/softener system down in Houma. I really liked it and it was a very noticeable improvement. Would do again.

I just installed the ispring 3 stage whole home water filter with a 50 micron pre filter.

We have very chlorinated and sediment filled water. It made a HUGE difference.

LINK

The build show YouTube channel recommended this system which treats the issue without making the water soft. I have been trying to learn more about it for my well water but haven’t decided yet.
