This is my third year trapping bee swarms. It's insane how easy it is. You put boxes out with empty frames and a little old comb then you add a little swarm lure. The bees move into the trap and then I bring them to my bee yard and put them in their permanent boxes. Free bees. It would cost close to $200 to buy the same amount of bees. I have already caught 3 swarms this year. It's a lot of fun to run my traps and then find them full of bees. It's Worth a try if you have ever thought about getting into beekeeping but want to keep it cheap.

I had a swarm in my BBQ pit this weekend. I didn’t know anything about beekeeping, so I’m not sure if I did the right thing or not. I didn’t know if they were looking for a home or thought they had found one. Anyway, a local feed store had bee boxes, so I bought one and transferred them a little at a time from the pit to the box. I sprayed the with a mist of water and brushed them into a small container, then brushed them out. They didn’t seem bothered by me at all, never got aggressive with me or stung. I waited until dark to move the box, then spent some time moving the stragglers to the box the next morning. I’m not sure if they’ll stay, but they’re all still in the box and have been going in and out for a couple days.

Sounds like you did well. Only thing you could have done better was add a little sugar to the water. But I bet they stay. Swarm bees actually tend to be more docile because they aren’t protecting honey or babies.

We usually grab a few around the yard where we store our boxes. At one time we had around 20 hives around the house and I'm sure they swarmed so we're just getting a later version of our bees. Usually pick up a few every year from 911 calls as well.

I had a swarm get behind the siding of my house where the top wood siding met the brick in between floors one and two.

Called a beekeeper... he came and set some traps or something out and got them all out. Not sure how he did it, but he just got up there... long sleeves only... looked around... bees all around... I found it impressive.

Couple days later... no bees. Trimmed it back up... caulked it... good as new.
