I have a desktop that the power supply was fried by entergy 3 years ago. My hard drive has pictures on it that I would like to get. What's the easiest way to do this? I have another desktop that someone gave me that works except I think hard drive doesn't work.

if i understand your question (and i might not as it is not very clear)
1. take HDD out of comp with busted power supply
2. place said HDD in 2nd desktop that works in place of the busted HDD
3. turn on comp
4. profit

Yeah unless his HDD is fried too, then I'm not seeing why this is a big problem.

Wasn't really sure if it was that easy

Same type of computer? Easy.
Different type? Not so easy.

You've dealt with a lot of hard drive swaps, have you?
I do it on a regular basis as part of my job. Maybe I do know what I'm talking about.

there are adapters out there that you can plug a hard drive into and make it accessible through USB. most IT nerds will have one. it's the easiest way to attempt to retrieve data off a hard drive without booting into it.

Find a computer that boots up to Windows. Is your Hard Drive a SATA? If it is then find a SATA data cable and hook it up to the mother board. Plug one of the power cables into your hard drive as well. Turn the computer on and find your drive under the My Computer section. The End.
For future reference do not call your computer a "CPU." A CPU is your processor.

I'm late to the party, but if putting the HDD from the PC with with the dead PSU into the one with the dead HDD doesn't work, put the PSU from the one with the dead HDD into the one with the dead PSU.
If neither work, the original HDD you're worried about is probably dead. To be safe, download " Ubuntu live" onto either a cd or USB and place into any combination of working PSU + HDD with material you want to save. Very possible the HDD's data isn't recoverable without professional and rather expensive help, but there are tons of free options to employ before that point.

Not if you think PC brand makes a difference

PC brand does make a difference. Lots of different drivers for different components. I've put Compaq drives in Dell computers and they don't boot. Or if they boot you have to jump through hoops and install the right network driver, display adapter, etc. to get it to a point of usability.
It may not be simple for someone looking for a quick fix.

If you're booting to the slaved drive, you're in worse shape than you seem...
