I’ve always been in decent shape but have never really been a runner. I ran my first 10k this past weekend in 51 minutes and am looking to run a marathon 40 days from now in Jackson. What advice would you give someone running their first marathon and is 40 days long enough to train?

You probably need at least 14 weeks to prepare, at minimum. If you try to ramp up that fast you are going to injure yourself.

Even a half marathon at 40 days would be pushing it a bit - you would have to have a lot of built in walks for the half

Give it 3 months minimum of training.

Why do you want to make the jump in distance?

That’s a big jump in a short time span. Does Jackson have a half marathon option?

Jackson, MS? A marathon in MS in 40 days sounds oppressive.

40 days is not long enough to train if your longest run is 6.2 miles.

I did want to clarify one thing - the speed in which you can run a 10k has 0 weight on your ability to run a Marathon. Running a Marathon is just a completely different beast, and not training properly for it will knock you out for a very very long time.

P.S: It sounds like you are fairly new to running, the 51 minute 10k is pretty good, keep at it, I would just lookup a Marathon plan and work your way to it and not try it in 40 days, you are seriously just asking for trouble if you do.

Run a half first.

I used to run 10 miles several times a week. Started putting in for the lottery for marathons in NYC and Chicago. I ran a half marathon and that got rid of my desire to run a full marathon. The pounding on my legs for the last two miles was brutal. I wouldnt have been able to finish a full marathon, not even close.

I run 10k's all the time now but will probably never even run a half marathon again.

Everyone is different and you may love it but try a half before the full.

Yeah, it’s not so much about whether you’ll be able to cross the finish line or not…it’s more about how awful the whole experience would be and the long term effects of it

If you are in decent running shape, a marathon in 40 days is definitely doable.

That being said, goal setting is the big factor here. No where near enough time to train for a marathon at a similar pace as your 10k. Goal should be to run very easy and very slow and shoot for just finishing. Don't even think about sub 4 hours.

The guy is attempting to >4x his longest distance in 40 days. I would not advise. I tried to run a half this year, ran a 15k in Feb and tried to ramp up for the half after running the 15k, and injured my calf and have not been able to run for almost a month and have instead been walking and lifting weights

My advice (like others) would be to not do it. Trying to run a half in that time would be an ambitious goal, a full would be a completely different animal. Has to be a high injury risk as well. Plenty of marathons around, don’t rush it
