Has anyone here had PRP injections for a rotator cuff tear versus having surgery, or do you know someone that's had this done? I've been reading and it seems to be a possibility for healing. Thanks for any good feedback.

This and/or stem cells sounds intriguing but is very expensive and not covered by insurance

I had shoulder surgery and was definitely contemplating prp/ stem cell injections . At the end of the day, it was too much money with uncertain results for me

This may be something I do down the road depending on how the technology and research advances

Thanks. If I may ask you, what kind of expense were you up against? I did read that it's not an insurance covered therapy and would consist of multiple injections over a period of months.

I tore my right rotator cuff, labrum, and biceps 3 years ago and had surgery. Recovery time was 18-22 months mainly due to rotator cuff and biceps. I got cleared after 10 months of busting my arse in rehab. In march i had to have the left rotator cuff repaired. It was torn pretty bad. My Dr. Had to do the surgery but he also did stem cell injections when the surgery was complete and i was cleared from him after 3 months and 2 weeks. My insurance did not pay for it but man it was so worth it just for the recovery time alone it was unreal. Would highly suggest if you can do it without surgery to give it a shot

Thanks. Was your surgeon the same for both? Is yes, was the PRP offered for your first surgery? You're recovery time on the first one was rough! That's one big reason I don't want to go through with surgery if possible. How much was your expense for the PRP and was it done at the time of your surgery or like a therapy?

Here is some info from a company called Regenexx. They have doctors around the country that use their technology and methods. There is a doctor in lafayette does this. He is the only one in la that I know of. There are quite a few drs in Houston that specialize in this as well (outside of the Regenexx program)

Pricing (subject to change and dependent upon your condition): One Regenexx- SD cycle can range between $1200 and $6500 per site, depending on the treatment protocol recommended by Dr. Bond. Regenexx Procedures are not covered by insurance at this time. If it is determined that you are a candidate and you consent to treatment, there may be other treatments for your condition that will help in your success at an additional charge. In some cases, the doctor may recommend you repeat the cycle.

No 2 different surgeons the first is much older and did not offer the stem cellls but the new surgeon is in his 30's and was highly recommending the stem cells for the recovery. They pulled the stuff out when i was under for the surgery then put it in that machine to clean it and whatever then right when they stitched me up they did the stem cell injections. Then went to physical therapy 3 days a week but also did the same stuff at home 4-5 times a day. I think the stem cell cost me around 6k but it was so worth it

Some surgeons I work with use to use the PRP all the time. But they eventually stopped because of the cost and inconclusive results.

I work for a rehab clinic in Hammond (also in Covington and NOLA) and we can do stem cell injections.

The only patient I've had contact with that has had the stem cell had one injection in her left hip and one in her right shoulder.

She had previously tore her rotator cuff, had surgery, did the rehab, and was doing better. She then reinjured the same shoulder, had an MRI (possible tear) and needed another surgery. She had one stem cell injection and within 3 weeks said she was as good as new.

She did not get good results from the hip injection.

Thank you. In my limited research, I'm finding that there seems to be a significant number of re-injuries to a surgically repaired rotator cuff.

It would be great to be able to chart her progress. Thanks again.
