Im 43 and very active but dealing with normal aging with fatigue and recovery.

I noticed in my last blood work my hemoglobin was 13.2 and went back and saw historical bloodwork and its been 13.0-13.5 for the past 5 years.

I gave bloodwork yesterday and it was 13.1. Ive asked my doctor if an iron supplement would help, and he said it's not worth it because it would just cause constipation and could do more harm than good if i dont need it.

Does that sound right? 13.2 and above is normal (some say 14). My body has just felt off and I just want to know what harm taking an Iron supplement would do.

I just don't know why he's so hesitant to let me take one.

And yes im the guy that posted I have mono, i just didnt want to bog down 1 post with 2 issues.

Your doctor is right, the body has no way to quickly rid itself of excess iron in the case of overdosing it. 13.0-13.5 is fine and if your panels aren't showing an iron deficiency, you could do more harm than good by taking a supplement. What were your other value from your panel?

I’ve been anemic and I’ve been taking moringa and a Slow Fe iron pill. It has no affect on my gut and my levels are normal now.

Are you of Italian descent? Might be thalassemia minor. That's what I have. Iron supplements are a big no no if you got thalassemia

Had any dental work done lately? My mother became anemic after she had a tooth pulled.

There is Iron Deficiency Anemia and there is Thalassemia Anemia. I am 100% Sicilian and Thal. Minor runs in my family. I have it. Iron supplements are dangerous if it is Thal. Minor.
I take extra B vitamins....B Complex, B12 Methylcobalamin sublingual microlozenges.

I am a female.

+1. I have thalassemia minor and doc specifically told me to stay away from iron sups. He said if I want to take anything it should be folic acid, but if the anemia isn't bothering me then I don't even need that.

That’s not anemia… your hgb can fluctuate easily based on your hydration or even testing variances. That would be considered stable and normal which is why your Dr is not giving in to your hypochondriasis

I'd be more worried about that than your normal hemoglobin level.
