I thought it would make sense to create a centralized list of tests of metabolic health. Here's my shot at it:
quote:

NMR Lipid panel
Provides the "standard" numbers (which are partially BS) as well as the much more granular and relevant particle analysis.
quote:

CRP, High Sensitivity
Great measure of CV inflammation. My understanding is that it measures actual presence of inflammation and not just risk of inflammation.
quote:

Lipoprotein A
Cholesterol sub-particle that can be very inflammatory and cause atherosclerosis.
quote:

LP-PLA 2
Another marker for CV inflammation - similar to CRP. However, some labs have stopped offering this and its accuracy has fallen into question.
quote:

NMR LDL Particle Number
Small LDL particle count.
quote:

Serum Insulin
IMO, perhaps the most important of all. If you pick no other "extra" pick this one. Much more relevant than your fasting glucose.
quote:

Hemoglobin A1C
Some will be very familiar with this, particularly you diabetics/pre-diabetics.
quote:

Homocysteine
Another inflammation marker, although this one can be expensive. I have found that my insurance company paid for 90% of all of these. What other ones you got?

CBC--can tell you if you have a GI bleed, infection, leukemia/lymphoma.

BMP--a measure of hydration, in addition to many other electrolyte abnormalities.

LFT--liver enzymes.

I'm honestly kidding, but these are the basic "bloodwork" tests, and shouldn't be overlooked (in addition to the fasting lipid panel).

Honestly, the most common vitamin deficiency is vitamin D, so a vitamin D-25 hydroxy should be the one "exotic" level to check, but most people should just take 1000 units of cholecalciferol per day and not worry about it.

When will then be now?

I had an NMR done 2 years ago. Confirmed what I suspected. From following a ketogenic diet, my LDL particle count was low, meaning I had more big fluffy non dangerous LDL.

I've also become aware in the past year of the Wheat Zoomer. It's essentially a full gut panel. It shows sensitivity to most gluten and non-gluten grains. Interestingly, a person I knew that believed they were suffering from gluten sensitivity (and had been on a gluten-free diet for years, focusing on "good" grains like quinoa and amaranth) discovered that they had ZERO sensitivity to gluten, but did have some sensitivities to non-gluten aspects of grains. They have since completely eliminated grains from the diet and reverted to a healthy state.

The total and LDL cholesterol numbers that everyone gets in a normal panel and which the entire industry seems to scale expectations off of are almost entirely irrelevant. Congrats on the big fluffies!
