Building a home gym

Tired of paying $45 a month for a crowded anytime fitness membership that has no bumper plates and looking to build a home set up without breaking the bank.
Looking to do mostly barbell olympic lifting so I’ll start with power rack and accessories , barbell, plates.
Recommend me the budget friendly brands. If you’re in the BR metro area and want to sell yours to upgrade, drop your email!

Budget friendly brands:
Titan Fitness
Bells of Steel
You can definitely get your rack from one of these brands. I would plan to get safeties since you'll being working out alone sometimes.
I would spend a little extra money and get a good barbell from Rogue Fitness. You can also get one of their boneyard bars for cheaper, but without a warranty.
I would also check facebook marketplace, craigslist, and offerup for deals in your area. Buying plates and dumbbells used is usually cheaper.
I would recommend building your gym slowly with quality items that you are actually going to use.
Things to consider:
Gym in your garage or in your house?
How large of an area are you planning for your gym?
Ceiling height?

Drop me an email. I may have a setup on the north shore that's exactly what you're looking for. Cage, bumper plates, adjustable bench, and barbell. Rogue and Titan stuff.
ETA: Sold!

I’ll just tell you it ain’t cheap. You’ll pay for the convenience. A good rack, barbell and plates will cost you multiple years of membership fees.
I’m not saying it isn’t worth it. Im just saying it’s not going to be cheap. Don’t do it to save money.

My main ATF is in Dutchtown and over the past year or 2, they've added more racks and bumper plates.

We got a Rogue rack with barbell and plates for an awesome price off of Facebook Marketplace when we were putting together our office gym.
I asked the guy why he was selling this high end stuff at such a good price. His answer was "I'm switching to a kettlebell program."
Ok... so you'll never switch back to a barbell program ever again?
Anyway, check Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

It's 100% worth the money. You don't have to deal with douchebags hogging a machine for 20 minutes straight, and you won't get distracted by girls in tight yoga pants. Rogue has high quality squat and barbell racks, although keep in mind it's one of the most expensive equipment brands

I have a Rogue set for outside if you're interested. If your garage ceilings are really tall it could fit.

This is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Investing in my home gym has done wonders for my health and fitness level. I have a third car garage attached separate from the main garage. This time of year I have a swamp cooler running while I’m in there. I also have a few dry erase boards to track my historical 1 rep max and also keep track of what I’m doing for the day. I have mine decorated with a large LSU flag and American flag on back of garage door and then surrounding the top of the walls with a flag from every state I’ve lived in. I have a couple of other motivational items on the wall as well.
Recently added a rogue echo bike.
Rack: Rogue RM-6 Monster 2.0 (matador dip bar, landmine, crown pull up bar attachments). I also have the shrimp trawler off the side with an 80 lb heavy bag.
Bench: Rogue AB-3. I picked this one bc it has the incline/decline bench option and incline sit-ups as well.
Bars: Rogue Ohio power bar. Rogue EZ curl bar.
Plates (# of pairs): Rogue deep dish 45 (3), deep dish 25 (1), Olympic change plates 10 (3), 5 (2), 2.5 (1), Rogue HG bumpers 45 (2), 35 (1), 25 (1), 10 (1)
Dumbbells: Powerblocks pro series with extension to 90 lbs. Love my powerblocks. They are pretty much bullet proof. They take a little getting used to bc of the shape but I’m a big fan now.

Unless you're a construction baw, don't forget to find someone to bolt the rack down.
If you're cycling through Houston at any point, GetRXd has their warehouse about a mile east of Minute Maid. I paid less than $2k seven years ago for a full kit, with a freestanding rack, bench, kettlebells, bars, bumper plates, etc.
Two warnings:
1) Don't mount the rack too close to a window or a wall, because you may not be able to put a plate on the bar, assuming it's in a garage. However, your garage door opener is going to control a lot of the placement. Pay attention to how you're going to do pullups, too, and what part of the rig you're going to use for them.
2) Pay attention (if you can) to the width of the bumper plates. I don't know what you lift, but some of the wider 45s don't leave enough room to put on as much weight as you need on the bar. Due to space issues, I don't think I could load more than 395 on the bar and still get the collars on.

All I can add is don't feel like you have to stick with expensive as frick brands like Rogue. Pay less and get more. I have a Titan X3 rack. The welds are roboticly laid beauties, but they are clean and it's solid AF. Perfectly fine and cost half of Rogue's equivalent.

I'd say this is really the only downside

Bolt Fitness is also in Houston. I bought some accessory stuff there (floor mats, bench, bands, clock, etc). I plan on getting KBs and a few other things from there. Everything I saw seemed quality. That said, I can't get over how hideous their plates are.

Got mine done about a month ago with advice from here.

I have spent around $4000 so far, it is not cheap. It will take time to get pure ROI, but quality of life can not be emphasized enough. It is nice never waiting on equipment and/or taking however long you want to complete your workout.

do you want full rack or do you want half rack? essentially you need to decide what dedicated space you have. I would suggest wall mounted half rack
as far as what brands, depends on budget
top brands for home gym. in order imo only
top teir
legend
sorinex
rogue
straydog strength
mid teir
rep
elitefts/willaims strength(can be top depending on choice)
lower teir (but still more than anyone on here will ever need)
getrxd
bolt
titan
as far as what to get, i suggest 3x3 with 1" or 5/8" holes so you can add lots of attachments. I prefer 5/8" but many of the best attachments are 1" only now.
as far as what to get
rack- 2/4/or 6 post rack
adjustable bench- rep or rogue imo
bar- suggest rogue
weights- decide if you want steel or rubber
for flooring do 4x6x3/4" rubber stall mats from tractor supply
i would add gymnastics rings first, then bands from westside, elitefts or rogue.
from these add a strongman sandbag then you can branch to either dumbbells or kettlebells and all the attachments.

You didn't mention it, but a full length mirror is helpful for monitoring form in a home gym.
Good for you about not using a gym. Since high school, I've always worked out at home, with my steel Yorks, mirror, and such.

I dont know, $150 to sign up, $70/month. I got a home gym for cheaper. thats what it cost at the gym I was using.
Now do i have all the same equipment? No, but i dont have to sit arond and wait for people to get off the equipment that i do use.
And i can run outside so i dont need a treadmill.
