If so, how did you get it prescribed and did you use insurance to cover costs? There is a discount card for those with Type 2 Diabetes but for pure weight loss it can be thousands of dollars in cost. Any experience here?

My neighbor and a bunch of his buddies are all taking it. He’s lost about 60 lbs. He had a lot to lose. It’s a self administered shot if I’m not mistaken.

I work with several people who are taking it

For a few weeks there was a supply issue because so many People jumped on the bandwagon that most warehouses ran out of supply, for the time being it appears to be resolved . I felt bad for the actual diabetics who were using it as they had to do without until the supply was replenished

It has great results so far from my sample size I see . Everyone has been pleased as it definitely is curbing their appetite and cravings .

I will say, the big chains have cut back on their willingness to dispense mounjaro with the discount cards UNLESS you have an accompanying diabetes diagnosis . If you’re using it off label for weight loss, I doubt they fill it. Just an FYI.

Yes I’ve written it for lots of people.

But it seems the well as run dry around here. No pharmacies will fill it unless you use the diagnosis code for diabetes. We were using the coupon card and everyone could fill it for $25-50. But no more.

So is this one of those really good drugs that actually helps with weight loss? What's the mechanism? Also, safety stats?

Yea it’s a newer version of Ozempic (semaglutide). Both are GLP-1s, but mounjaro is also a GIP agonist. Meaning that slows gastric emptying, regulates postprandial glucagon, and reduce food intake.

The one big adverse effect they found was pancreatitis and in mice they studied and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.

Just wish it would get FDA approved for weight lose so we can start really taking full advantage of its weight lose properties.

Develop diabetes.

No one will pay for it for insulin resistance, impaired fasting glucose, or obesity. The coupon card has been changed because it became so popular so fast.

Your insurance company doesn’t care about preventing diabetes or maintaining a healthy weight, or really your healthcare at all if it doesn’t save them a dime, so they probably aren’t going to pick it up for those indications for several years, unfortunately.

I’ve had some patients ask me to just say they have diabetes and write it for them. I’m like ma’am that’s insurance fraud and I ain’t doing that

frick, that's awesome for people wanting to lose weight, especially considering other options like gastric bypass.

If I don’t get asked to commit medical fraud six times a day, I must be out of the office.

I have one lone patient who pays $1000 a month for it. Good for her if she can afford all that.

What's the typical turnaround time for weight loss on average, let's say per week?

I know quite a few people that would pay that amount for this if it's a wonder drug with minimal side effects.

Additionally, and I already know the answer, but any supplements it there that mimic this drug?

It varies really. I have a close friend on it and he’s lost 16 pounds in a month. But he had plenty of weight to lose. Others are losing 7-9 pounds on the lowest dose of 2.5 mg/0.5 mL in a month.

It’s the long term that these folks will really see the benefit. But it’s all but done for now.

Here’s what my neighbor said::

quote:

I was 323.4
My goal was 245
I'm 241.8 Wednesday so I've started eating more but I'll probably keep going into the 230's.

No idea what the long term is or the maintenance is.

Damn that's crazy. Again, shame on the FDA on this one. This sounds like the real deal for people that could use a serious boost toward weight loss goals and maintenance.

And it’s pretty cool how I’ve seen it helping overweight patients with other comorbidities.

For example, one patient with binge eating disorder was able to control her cravings while also losing weight.

I’m happy people are losing weight because our health system could use it but damn. How about a little self control and exercise? What happens when they stop? Is it similar to eating through the sleeve?
