Doc says I’m anemic. What’s a good iron supplement?
Posted on 7/22/23 at 5:29 pm to jctiger73
Ferrous Sulfate. Take 325mg twice a day. Well, that's at least what I'm doing. I have low-iron anemia and that's what my endocrinologist put me on. She said it takes about 6 months for iron levels to fully recover.
Then again, things may be different in your case, especially depending on your bloodwork. I recommend you get an endocrinologist if you haven't already.

This is a serious question…are you female?
Because iron deficiency anemia in a male is colon cancer until proven otherwise.
There are different types of anemia that would not be related to colon cancer, but those would not need iron supplementation.

Why didn't the doc write a prescription for an iron supplement?

I have a prescription but my doctor mainly did it for convenience for me. OTC iron supplements should be sufficient as long as he's dosing it properly.

I found it interesting that runners can suffer from iron deficiency due to crushing red blood cells in their feet.

Hit a supplement but maybe also switch to baby spinach for your salads for a while.

My mother was anemic enough to need a transfusion s few years ago. They expedited a colonoscopy, which was negative. They finally decided bleeding from a recent dental procedure caused it.

I was slightly anemic for a couple of years. Getting on TRT fixed it.

Are you Italian descent? Make sure to get tested for thalassemia minor if so. Iron supplements can be really bad for you if you have thalassemia.

+1
I have this, and was specifically cautioned against iron supplements. The doctor suggested folic acid instead.

Has the folic acid helped? Anything else you're doing that helps? I've just accepted the fact that I need my afternoon nap

Not really, I just use it as a crutch if I don't want to do something on my wife's honey-do list
I haven't had blood work done since starting folic acid but I'll set up my yearly PCP appointment soon to check hemoglobin and RBC.

I am 100% Sicilian and I also have the Thalassemia trait/Thalassemia Minor. Extra Iron supplements are harmful for this type of Anemia.
I take a Women's Multivitamin Ultra Potency (no iron),
Nature's Way Stress B Complex, and Sublingual B 12 (Methylcobalamin Not Cyanocobalamin) Fast Dissolve cherry tablet every morning.
