Trying to give yoga a go. Started two weeks ago.

I can barely sit Indian style. I'm on a diet to lose weight (25 pounds to get to my goal weight), so I'm hoping shedding the fat will help with flexibility. But my hips are embarrassingly stiff.

I've been practicing yoga for a while now and Tony Horton has pretty good discs on yoga.

P90X2 has one of the best yoga routines and I still incorporate it into my routine to this day.

I'm pretty sure you can find the disc online to where you don't have to buy the whole set.

Pigeon pose.

Accumulate 5 mins each leg per day in the pose. Fight it until you can no more

I tried pigeon pose but my instructor worried about me tearing something. I use a blanket with it but it's hard to get my hips aligned correctly.

Try attempting to sit in a squat position. Hold on to a pole or something solid for balance if needed. Try and just accumulate 2 mins every 3 days and just increase by 1 minute each week.

Attenpt to keep your torso as straight up and down as possible. Your ankles are prob tight AF too.

Or simply sit in a chair with good posture. Cross one leg over the other right on top the knee. Use your torso by leaning forward to add pressure. This is about as basic as it will get. If you aren't feeling anything put a phone book under your foot on the ground

And hip stretching can be somewhat painful esp if you sit all day at work and again when you get home. Just go slow and breath. You shouldn't rip anything but it can be somewhat painful.

this is pigeon pose, just inverted. so do this. you don't have to do it against a wall. just grab behind the leg on the hamstring.

sit on blocks or blankets when in indian style. this will get your hips above your knees and will get them more open. one of my instructors used to use phone books. he would tear one page out each day and over the course of years got one step closer to the ground each day. it's not about doing it overnight, it's about slow improvement over time.

have to find something to put under the hip you're stretching ... doubt there's a better pose out there for hips ... assuming you have a thorough warmup and breathe ... push it to the edge ...

edit: saw your second post ... nmd ... still, make sure whatever you're using is high enough to allow you to maintain the pose for a long time so you can adjust and go deeper every 2 minutes or so ...

My wife has had hip and IT band issues for several years with no luck at a solution.

She recently tried Airrosti treatment a few times. She said it hurt like hell and she had bruises for wel over a week but her pain had subsided.

Some think it's a scam with all of those stickers that you see athletes wearing around, however she went to the clinic for a session.

So form your own opinion....

I had zero hip flexibility. I've been doing Frog pose every night since January for at least 3 mins and have noticed some dramatic differences already. I usually combine it with a minute and a half with a variation of Happy Baby. Then I stretch the rest of my body for another 10-15 mins or so. Has made a world of difference.

To be quite honest while stretching is great, you need some air squats, step ups, and burpees in your life....the hip flexors need to be initiated in a concentric movement in addition the stretch for quicker results

I do some mobility before I lift. I'm sure that's good enough.

Stretching is great but I only have so much time to lift, stretch, do cardio and hold a full time job. :)

Lizard pose is good and not as intense as pigeon can be.

There is an excellent app: Yoga Studio by Gaiam. It's only $3.99 and you get a ton of classes for all levels classified based on what you need - flexibility, strength, combo. They have classes as short as five minutes or up to an hour.

You can look at each class and see what poses they do before you start. You can also customize classes to just do poses you want to do. I can't always make it to the yoga classes at the rec center so this app has been a life saver.
