I'm still working on consistently hitting the 3W off the deck. I'm not close to pulling out that shot during a round since I'm so bad at it. Currently, my best option is my 4h which I hit really well.

Any tips to hit the fairway 3W wood better? Since I can hit my 4h well, should I consider getting a 2h or 3h and just say screw the fairway 3W?

If I got a 2h or 3h, what should I drop? 3W, 4h, or 4i?

I would say get the strongest degree 2h and roll with that. I love mine.

Choke up on 3wd, til its about same length as your 4hy, swing 70% til you hit it solid. Then, choke out gradually, still swinging 70%, until you get normal length for you. Then increase swing speed, as long as you keep hitting ball solid.

What's the problem you're having with the 3 wood?

This is great advice.

with tighter fairway lies, concentrate on hitting down slightly like with an iron rather than sweeping. I also choke down a little.

Just got back from the range. Choking up and just focusing on making solid contact helped. Being mindful of taking the club straight back and then bringing it down straight through the same path also helped I think. By the end I was crushing 'em off the deck (for me). We will see if I can keep it up next time I go out.

My problem was just not consistently hitting it square and when I did it would be a very low line drive.

Played 9 this morning. Took out the 3 wood one time, did a few very smooth, good feeling practice swings. Then stepped up to the ball and caught dirt and rolled the ball 75 yards.

My biggest struggle too. Mine is completely mental. I can hit tight draws with a FW Wood on the range all day long. When I have to execute it on the course, I have a hitch where I hit the ground slightly behind the ball. The club bounces off the turf and catches the ball right above the equator. Hit a hot grounder about 150. I won't even try it unless I have nothing but Fairway between me and the green.

I also don't have trouble with this shot off the tee or on the rare instance where it's sitting up on a coushon of some kind.

Will have to try the choke up 75% shot.

John Daly used to have the swing thought of "low and slow" when hitting 3 wood or driver off the deck. Choking up will help a bit, but I would focus on having a smooth transition from the top to the ball.

I would also advise setting a tee up 4-5 inches in front of the ball on line with your target - with the goal of staying down through the ball and clipping the tee with your follow through. This helps with keeping the club face squared at the target longer, while also establishing the good habit of picking out immediate intermediary targets, like Jack Nicklaus was known for doing.

Mr Ham
There is a lot of good advice being posted here with one small problem

So the best advice I can give you at this juncture is to suggest that you not take swing advice from anyone who has never seen you swing .

I'm just sayin.....

You're trying to sweep it so when you don't catch it perfectly it's going to be awful. Hitting woods from the fairway is just like hitting irons. You need to hit down on it and compress the ball. If you'll work hard to hit down on it instead of trying to get it on the slight upswing you will have much better success with consistent contact.

are you shifting your weight to the front leg and getting your lower body out of the way before your arms come through?

Where is your ball position? I am the worlds worst at playing the ball too far forward with my fairway woods, and hybrids. Move the ball to the middle of your stance, then push it one ball forward. Make sure your hands are in front of the ball at address. Take a nice smooth swing, like you would a long iron.

I feel like I do on my practice swings, and then when I step up to hit the ball I tighten up or something. Instead of just swinging I think I try to hit and lift the ball.

I typically put the ball right between the middle of my stance and front foot, but I will move it back some and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip.

I just bought a used Callaway FT-iZ 18 degree hybrid. Can't wait to try that out. I'm sure it won't be as easy as the 4hy I hit well, but it surely has to be easier than hitting the 3W off the deck. It's about 2 inches shorter and 2.5 more degrees of loft than my 3W.

well this is exactly why right here. you don't have to help the ball off the ground. you want a descending blow going into the ball, and loose arms.

when you get to the top of your backswing, just let them fall and turn without trying to manipulate them in any way.
