My dad gave me his late 90's Taylor Mades when I was in high school. I'm 30 now and still use them.

Change whenever technology advances enough to make a real difference in performance

Driver and fairway "woods" and hybrids have really improved over the last five years but I think they have plateaued now

Irons on the other hand have not seen a significant improvement in over 25 years and are not likely to any time in the foreseeable future

This. Study came out a while back where driver head tech hasnt really changed outside of the adjustment factor since 07. It's all in the shaft/head combo that fits your numbers
