How do you test out irons / drivers before you buy?

I haven't bought clubs in like 20 years, as I'm just getting back into golf after a long hiatus. Used to be that the Pro Shop at my local course had all kinds of clubs that I could take out to the range and try to my heart's content before deciding what to buy. The pro shops at all the courses I've been to recently (which have all been public...in case that matters) sell balls, gloves, and clothes/hats, but have been very, very limited in terms of clubs.

How do I test out various different sets of irons or drivers these days on a real, outdoor driving range these days? I don't want to buy irons based on hitting off of turf into a net at a Golf Galaxy or the like.
