*** VENTING ***

Okay, I really do understand the purpose, it's just after years and years of golf, you would think there would be a better system.
Played in an after work golf league that gives strokes to certain players. Shot even par 36 and lost by 7 shots. Finished 22nd.
One of the players in our group shot 52 and (with strokes) ended up at -2.
The better you are, the more you are penalized. Damn I love this game.

*** END VENT ***

What’s your handicap?

9, but play to a 6-7 on this course.
But does not apply to this league. THEY determine your strokes when you sign up and give "average" score. It's skewed when you start, but it adjusts as you turn in scores. Been playing for two years now, so the strokes "should be" pretty accurate.

Unless they are flighted, I despise handicapped tournaments for this very reason. I've stopped playing in them. 99% of the time the guy that shot a 52 (-2) doesn't even have a legit handicap too.

THIS! There is an organization here that has some great looking tournaments, but a lot of them are not flighted. If I'm an 18-20 hdcp, and unless it's for a charity, why would I want to pay money to play against single digit players? Never made any sense to me.

If your an 18-20, the handicap system will benefit you more than a 5-6 handicap.

This is incorrect. The hcp system specifically spells out lower hcps have an advantage as an incentive to improve in the game. They made steps in 2020 to reduce this effect but it still slightly favors lower hcps.

Of course, sandbagging is still rampant.

Seems like the opposite.
In MY experience with the two leagues I belong to, higher hdcp players have more fluctuation. They are more apt to catch lightning on a specific round. In general the lower handicaps players are more consistent and do not have that outlier score.

For instance, our bottom player shot his career best 79 last month. First time breaking 80 and rarely shoots in the 80's at all. We play Stableford and he pulled a +17. Second place was +6. I would have had to shoot a 65 to pull that many points.

Handicaps are wonky.

In the 1990’s, I started playing in our club championship. My game was good, but not elite, so I signed up for the flight just below the championship flight. Unlike the championship flight, we used our handicaps. Over two days, I had the lowest score. But I lost to a guy I had beaten by 5 strokes because he was getting 3 strokes a day on me. After that year, I decided to play in the championship flight with no handicaps, and take my lumps. Much better.

What would you propose as an alternative?

Maybe not completely ignoring 60% of the rounds you play since HCP formula only uses the top 8 of the last 20 rounds?

One simple solution would be to average the middle 14 or 16 scores and throw out the extremes on each end. This would make it much more realistic

I've seen, plenty of times, people sitting right there on that 10.2 or 9.1 and just not entering rounds that would bump them to another flight.

At a private course, those types of people need to be called out and mocked otherwise the entire structure doesnt make sense.

When one person in the 2-3 flight ends up in the top 2 every tournament, always outshoots his GHIN in tourneys but never seems to post a score lower than his GHIN the pro needs to step in and say something if the public pressure doesnt encourage change

They have computer programs that catch unlikely rounds.

I’m a 9.9 index.
My best of last 20 is 79.
My worst is 93.

Pope of slope would call
Me out if I shot 77/79 in club championship back to back.

Most honest golfers beat their cap about 1 in 4.

I will assume you are being sarcastic.

That IS the issue. I do beat them gross. In our leagues, you add in hdcp/strokes for NET scores and then I get hosed.
As stated, I shot a 36. The guy I played with shot 52. I end up even and he ends up -2.

Played our Stableford outing yesterday. I shot 79, which was the second lowest gross. I have to pull 28 points. I pulled 30 for a +2. The winner was +11. Pulled the second most points and ended up 9th out of 20 players.

I KNOW there is not perfect answer.

Ya it’s really bothered me lately. We do a skins game every Tuesday. Net and Gross.
There’s 3-4 people who seem to win every time. And they are guys with high enough handicaps to get 2 strokes on some holes.
They somehow always par a hole where they get 2 pops.

It’s like clockwork one of them out of 40 players will win a skin

Most every club I know uses the handicap incorrectly. They play it off the lowest handicap player, which is totally wrong. So if I'm a 5 handicap and play a 15, the 15 just gets 10 shots and I get zero. It should be I get 5 and he gets 15. Sure, for total score it doesn't matter, but most of the time it is by hole.
