Experimenting with shaft weight and length

was at the range today and met a college player in from school. We started talking about competitive golf and what the differences are, etc.
I tell him I've been having a hard time getting around on my long irons and bleeding them out right. So he asks to hit one of my clubs and has a hard time getting around on it, and hits the same miss I've been doing. I'm a tall guy and my clubs are about an inch and a half longer and a bit heavier than his.
I hit his clubs and instantly feel like I don't have to turn much at all relatively speaking, whereas with my 3 & 4 I feel I have to turn forever to hit a draw or just to keep it from tailing off to the right.
Does anybody have experience with how the shaft weight and length affect the swing? I'm considering cutting mine down to see if it makes things easier.

I'm thinking cutting the shafts down is going to mess everything up. Then, you'll need a completely new set of shafts. If you're 6'5, he's got no business hitting your irons.

Extended shafts definitely add swing weight. I was fitted for a set of Ping i20's a few years ago and ended up getting shafts + 1/2". The normal swingweight on the i20's was D0 and the swing weight with my extended shaft made them D2 up to D4 in some clubs.
Of you were fitted for the + 1 1/2" shafts, then your answer is probably going to be lighter shafts at the same length.

Don't fight it, play you a nice little high cutter, sucker will land soft, give you a good look for eagle

What's the swing weight on them

Cutting your irons down will make the shaft stiffer and lighter, conversely lengthening them will add weight and make the shaft more flexible.
If you are bleeding your long irons to the right, it may be because the shaft is too stiff and cutting it down will only make your problems worse. If you are 6'5, you likely need to add a bit of length to your 3 and 4 irons to give them more flexibility, which in turn should help you turn the ball over with less effort.
Always keep in mind that cutting down or lengthening a club impacts the lie angle on the clubs. Failure to adjust the lie angle accordingly can further exacerbate your issues. So make sure you know what you are doing and consult a professional before tinkering on your own.

Surprised you aren't asking about his calf size.

I've got no clue. Just went to the PGA superstore with my irons and the fitter recommended the lengthening.
I've never really gotten nerdy into the equipment. But when I swung that guys irons the other day it was so easy and smooth.
Whereas with mine being so heavy, I've got to tilt towards the target and go hard left with my hip turn to draw my long irons.

My SS requires a stiff shaft so I don't want to change that.
But I noticed today I had too much tilt backwards at impact so I'm gonna try and fix that before I do anything to my clubs.
Good info to think about, tho. Thanks
