Going to Carmel for part of my anniversary trip with the wife. She wants me to play golf one day and she's going to ride in the cart. Pebble is out of the budget. I am thinking Spanish Bay?? Any opinions?

Trip is end of April.

Could be wrong, but I thought I heard they may be redoing Spanish Bay. May not be an option.

Poppy Hills could work.

Bayonet is very affordable and Pasatiempo is a great course that is high end but not $$$ of the big 3 in area!

Agree with all of this: a bit less expensive but great round is Carmel Valley Ranch - just offering another option

Play Pacific Grove. Poor man's Pebble. You'll get to play along the shore of the Bay at least.

I’ve played Carmel Valley Ranch and really enjoyed it. Has some houses around it but it’s a nice loop. Played Delmonte too, would also recommend.

I prefer pasatiempo to pebble. Pebble has been desecrated by jack nicklaus and co. With them doing a full scale reno of spanish bay, i wonder if a pebble restoration is on the way. But then again what’s the point, they have their tee sheet full of people willing or pay 500-800 dollars a head, everyday, so it may not be the most pressing issue. However, Pasatiempo is incredible. Public access Alister MacKenzie courses are a rarity, and well worth the money IMO.

Maybe a dumb question and certainly not trying to hijack here but Pebble is a bucket list round for me. Although not quite in the Augusta National category, but damn close. At least for me. Is this course that way for most golfers? With that being said, I am really not sure that if I get danger close to Carmel, CA I am not pulling this trigger with cost not really being a factor.

Pebble isn’t just a tee time costs. When I played, it required a 3 night stay minimum. You’re at $3,500 there with just a room. Add another $1,000 for the round, caddie, drinks, lunch etc that day. Add another $500-1,000 for eating there the other 2 days. That’s before any pro shop swag or anything additional. I very much enjoyed it, and will do again but let’s not pretend it’s just a $600 tee time. That is assuming you don’t have the luxury of being in that area multiple days with the ability to get a tee time 24hr in advance.

If you’re not gonna spring for Pebble, I would echo the sentiment of Pasatiempo. It’s an amazing golf course and it’s also being renovated by Tom Doak. It should be even better when you play it assuming they are done by then

The way I look at it I would play pasatiempo everyday for the rest of my life. I would quit golf if I had to play pebble everyday.

Played Pebble in June. Didn't stay on property and was able to book around for 2. $785 for fee and half caddie. I was in Monterey for a week and not sure when I'll get back so the price was well worth it and honestly would have paid more. It's an incredible walk.
