Golf Week

quote:

People who make and sell counterfeit equipment know that frustrated golfers are looking for the quickest and least expensive ways to get the clubs they want. That creates motivation and opportunities.

Knowing that maybe it should not come as a surprise that the U.S. Golf Manufacturers Anti-Counterfeiting Working Group announced recently that a series of three raids bagged 9,769 pieces of clubs and components, as well as 10,600 pieces of trademark labels. Brands with gear being counterfeited included XXIO, Titleist, TaylorMade, PXG, Callaway and Ping.

I get these ads on Facebook selling brand new sets of Titleist, TaylorMade, etc. clubs for $99.

Who could be stupid enough to fall for that sh!t. It's either a complete sham and you'll never see that $99 again (plus a pretty good rate for shipping, I'm sure), or they're Chinese ripoffs.

Been a huge problem for years now.

Ping has hired several retired FBI Agents to investigate and close them down over there.

As soon as they shut one operation down another opens.

YouTube video, Rick Shiels, Fake vs real

A bunch of cheap pos junk too. This video is a good warning. If it's too good to be true, it probably is.

When I was 12 or so, I got a set of "King Snakes". At least i had a cool cobra bag, though. Haha.

That was 25 years ago so, yeah, knockoffs have been around a long time. Back then though, you could buy them at a retail golf shop.

Man this is exactly why I don't order any clubs off of eBay anymore. I only order from Callaway Golf Preowned or 2nd Swing Golf. They've gotten so good at these counterfeit clubs that it's almost impossible to tell just from looking at a couple of pictures. And even if you do get an authentic club off of eBay, you don't know how many times it's changed hands and had length, loft, lie, etc adjusted.

Save a little bit of coin on sales tax and use the classifieds on GolfWRX. Fakes would get called out and pulled by the mods.

Plus PayPal Goods and Services offers you buyer protection against counterfeit items. A lot of people aren't aware of that feature

Yep, there were tons of fake Callaway Big Bertha woods back then. The graphics / names on the heads were laughable.

Sometimes they even spelled Callaway wrong lol...

Eh not enough options to choose from in my opinion. You have to get lucky and hope somebody has the exact shaft/club combinations you need.

Rick Shiels bought a driver (knowing it was fake) from one of those cheap, knock-off sites.

He broke it in less than 5 drives and it was consistently 50 yards shorter than the real thing; well, before he broke it.

On a trip to China about 3 years ago a Chinese factory owner told me that some of the counterfeit merchandise for sale at cheap prices is actually the real thing stolen by workers from the factory where they are made. He mentioned Gucci bags saying that just because the bag is being sold on a street corner at a fraction of the usual price doesn't mean it's not a Gucci bag. I'm sure the same is true for golf clubs but I have no idea how to tell

I think those were component clubs - possibly from Golfsmith. Remember seeing them in the mid 90s.

add all that to being taller and needing length and lie changes. It's almost impossible to buy used clubs anymore.

Before all the retailers got onto eBay it was somewhat possible.

I've had really good luck using the WTB section and just post what you're looking for. The BST Forum is for personally use only, because they don't want local shops, retailers, or resellers spamming the board. That's why each member is only allowed one open post at a time, and no item can be relisted for 30 days if it doesn't sell.

Just because they don't want shops selling on there, doesn't mean they aren't there. I bought Epic Speed woods for $225 each as well as TSi2 woods for the same price brand new. Brand new TSi3 driver with Tour AD shaft was $525. That option is $749 plus tax through Titleist, plus the wait time. All done through PayPal G&S and zero issue. All my iron sets have come from there as well, including my current ZX7s
