I'm curious always heard rumors that Air Force bases have golf courses, is this true? Are they nice? Ever played one? Do you have to be in the air force to play one?

Was in for four years out of h.s. Joke was why were Air Force Bases golf courses built by the runways. Because they built the golf course first. The two I played were in good shape. One overseas and one stateside. I play Ft. Polk here and its terrible. Didn't used to be. The pro says no funds and lack of play. Well who wants to play a goat ranch. I would imagine you would have to get a pass to access the base like you have to Ft. Polk, unless you are DODC, retired or a contractor.

In Japan at Yokota AFB they only had a little par 3 course. However, military could go to a place called Tama Hills and play for dirt cheap. It was a real good track.

Eisenhower Golf Club at the Air Force Academy has two courses. The Blue and the Silver. The Blue was designed by Robert Trent Jones. A Shell's Wonderful World of Golf match was filmed years ago with Demaret & Snead. I saw Tiger play in a junior tournament in the '90s on the Blue Course. He didn't like the greens. They ate his lunch. I played the courses for 30+ years. My best score was a 74 on the Blue and a 73 on the Silver.

They are good. I played them in 1991 when I went to golf camp at the academy. I hated those bent grass greens too.

I was at Yokota from 1970 - 72. And yes, Tama was a very good, tough golf course.

They have a course on the Columbus (MS) air force base in my hometown. Played it once or twice a while ago and don't remember it being very good

I played the course on Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. It's called Woodlawn. Not a bad little track at all.

Was stationed in Misawa AB, Japan. They had a nice 18 hole course you could play between April,September. Snowed over a hundred inches a year there.

Where did they build it and when if you know that? As I recall, there wasn't a hell of a lot of vacant land on the base proper.

I used to play that course about once a week back in the late 90's, early 2000's. I was never in the military. Unless they changed the rules post 9/11.

I can't speak to the security at Ft Polk, post 09/11, but security increased significantly at the places I played. I normally played with three Air Force buddies, but if I was playing with a civilian friend it was easier to take him to the course in my vehicle and avoid the hassle.

Where? I have no idea I was only around 14 years old. The longest hole was around 125 yards so it didn't take much. My brother was stationed there and I would go visit.

Looking at google earth it is on the south end of the runway. Good times had at that place. I got picked up by some random while walking across the southern end of the runway one night after missing the last bus.

Barksdale is only in good shape when the commander plays.
