We had an 8 man Ryder Cup planned, but one guy has to back out for one day. We have a +3 on the trip and we thought we'd replace one fourball with a 2 vs 1 with the +3 and a few mid handicappers. Does anyone know of a formula or good way to involve handicaps? Or should it just be straight up?

Put the +3 vs 2 players around 15.

Always.

Handicaps are dumb. You can either beat someone or you can’t.

Well, then our trip competitions would be boring. We have a +3 and nobody else is single digits.

2ball net low, with a blind draw to drop a man from the team with four players after the match.

Let two mid handicappers play best ball against his one? I’m not sure honestly.

I thought that would make sense, but I still think the +3 has the advantage. I was kind of surprised there wasn't a formula to use wehn I googled it.

This could work, especially if you let the two mid handicappers play from tees forward of the +3 and/or give them 2 mulligans a side. Use net, not gross.

Have fun with it. Make the +3 tee off with a 5 iron on par 5s. Let each mid handicapper play from the ladies tees one hole a side. It is just a friendly competition. Be creative. Loser buys beers and everyone has a great time.

Myself -6.6 and my buddy -10 just played a +1. We played 2/1 best against him
We managed a 36 and still got beat by 2 strokes

I cannot imagine how much that would hurt the game. 99% of wagers would disappear at clubs across the country if handicaps were not considered when picking teams. Tournaments at clubs that often provide the life support needed for small clubs to make it through the year would hardly have any participants. That sounds terrible and very short-sighted.

Play the +3 against the next 2 lowest caps in the group (you said everyone else is mid at best) with strokes
Any other way the +3 dominates

I have no real insight, but here's my random thought. Average the two handicaps and then give them each half that number of strokes. So a 13 and a 15 would each get 7 strokes against the +3. You have to give them a chance to ham and egg it with the strokes, otherwise the +3 will roll easily.

Not sure if it makes sense to let them pop alternating up to the 14 handicap or if they should pop on the same hole. I'd lean to alternating, so one guy pops on the odd handicaps up to 13 and the other on the evens up to 14.

The better golfer would probably have to give them shots on most holes.

IF it’s a par 3 no strokes, but have the stick play back one tee.

The stick will probably win anyway, but if the other guys are not single digits, they probably can’t beat the stick even with full strokes.

^ this is the most likely outcome.

To beat a stick, even with strokes, you’ve got to play great and he can’t go low.

I appreciate all the ideas. We ended up deciding to have my dad drive out for the one round the other guy was going to miss. I'll keep these ideas in mind in case that falls through.
